Sure, there were times throughout high school and college where I was asked to go talk to younger students or children at the local YMCA or community schools but never was it something that I felt committed to or overly passionate about. As I graduated college and reflected back on my life, I began to realize just how fortunate I was to have the people and resources in my life to assist in getting to the point of being a college graduate. Jennifer McGarry’s Husky Sport organization has been a challenging one. I have had to understand that my influence as a teacher that was once with my students and community every single day is much different than my role where I am in the school and community 2-3 times a week and for 8-10 total hours. Alongside Dr. McGarry and other graduate students, we have to understand how to engage in this dynamic and fluid campus-community partnership to create as much positive impact as possible without taking steps backwards or ruining the established and authentic partnership and relationships that have been gained over the 10+ years of this specific partnership. For me, I have had to understand how to take a step back, evaluate, assess, and understand that I am only a partner in this relationship

Towards the middle of my sophomore year I received an email from my guidance counselor asking me if I wanted to attend the HOBY seminar during the summer. Only one student from the high school was chosen to go, and I was honored to have been that one. HOBY stands for the Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Seminar.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Being one of the only Mexican American girls at a school filled with extremely wealthy students made me feel uncomfortable. However, instead of confining myself from the community, I looked back upon my family's advice and in a small matter of time, I felt more comfortable living in this neighborhood. I proved to those who doubted me that their assumptions were incorrect; a low income Mexican American girl CAN persevere such obstacles and attain high achievements at an expensive boarding school. Because of these experiences, I think it’s extremely important to spread awareness on education to other individuals. My favorite quote from my grandfather is, “No olvides de dónde vienes” meaning, don’t forget where you come from, and I certainly argue that there is a huge importance in giving back to your community.…

When I had my first meeting about my senior year schedule and my counselor told me I could graduate early, I immediately said yes. I didn’t think about all that would go along with it and at the time I had no idea so in an attempt to convince me not to graduate early, my counselor told me to think about it and really weigh out my options. I thought about it a lot and didn’t see a single reason against it. 2 weeks later, after speaking to my parents I went right back to him and told him I am graduating early. He then asked me what's my plan.…

Community colleges have changed dramatically over the past decade. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC, 2012) defined this change and called for “community college leaders to breathe life into the vision outlined by the Commission, in which students’ educational experiences are redesigned, institutional roles are reinvented, and the system itself has been reset to meet the needs of students, their communities, and the nation.” (p. vi). In addition, the traditional model of college is changing. The Chronicle Research Services published a report named The College of 2020:…
