Reflective Essay: A After In A Class

Decent Essays
This year, I worked towards two goals: to pass the AP exam and to get a 90% or above in this class. I passed the AP exam without a doubt and unless this paper I am writing receives a grade below 72%, I should achieve that goal too. I am not aiming for that, however, as I try to go beyond what I need. My work and work ethic in this class prove that I deserve at least a 90% to finish the year off with. First of all, I find it hard to believe I would deserve anything below an A after getting an A every quarter so far (and not an 89.5% that just happens to round up either). I also strongly believe those A’s were well earned, as there was plenty of effort put into working in and out of the classroom, even though I find writing papers to be the bane of my existence. I did put my all into them, however, and I know it shows. …show more content…
Most of them earned above an 85% which is much better than the consistent 70-80% I had gotten used to receiving before taking this class. I believe structuring and meeting the task were my strongest skills, and those just happen to be what most of the grades were based on. However, the more subtle things I struggled with were transitions and voice. By attempting to work on them I was able to get consistently higher scores, but I still think I could use more improvement. Take my Independent Reading Assignment paper, for example; the transitions were leaps and bounds better than any paper I had written before, but some more voice and a clearer tone could have helped make it seamless. There are also other things I feel like I could improve on away from the pen and

During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

Let me say this to begin this paragraph, some people say they want the truth but settle for lies are words I live by. To be honest, at first, I thought you were trying to kill us (the first four units), I needed to settle for quickies with my wife instead of well you know. I would spend time with her then back to my office to read, respond or whatever was on my schedule for that evening. Honestly, my wife was mad at you, lol, until I reminded her of her receiving her Master’s Degree. I know too funny.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

In my ENG 110 class, I have made a substantial amount of progress that I believe will benefit me in the semesters to come. Initially, entering the ENG 110 course I thought it would be quite simple. During high school my English grades were always a B+ or higher. My first paper was a paper about my name which I scored an A on, this made me confident that I would be able to complete the course…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Many people have a place that is extremely special in their eyes. It could be a spot where they killed their first deer, high school football field, or any place they hold dear to their hearts. When they look back on experiences and memories, there is that one special spot that sticks out. When we think of our significant place we are easily to describe the feelings we grasped from past memories, and exactly what the place looked like. At first thought, our significant place is flawless, and we tend to forget the bad times and instead focus on the good.…
