Essay 1: Developing a Topic of Interest
As a sophomore in college, I have interacted with various instructors over the years and have determined that there are typically two types of instructors. The instructor who is willing to put in the extra effort to assure a student learns the material and succeeds in their class, and the instructor whose goal is to present the information as required and expect the student to regurgitate the information back on exams and/or essays. The instructor of a course can ultimately determine the amount of engagement a student has, the overall quality of learning, and how efficiently students are able to perform overall in the class.
The quality of teaching professionals over the years is decreasing, which unfortunately,

For example, I took a history course here at Bellarmine University last semester and encountered a professor whose primary goal was to relay the information to the class then have us memorize and regurgitate the information back to him in essay format. This professor taught only through lecture. He didn’t consider, nor did he honestly care, about the visual learners who could have benefited from visuals or PowerPoint slides to follow along with. After I failed the first exam, I approached this professor about alternative study techniques successful students had used in the past and he looked at me in a confused manner then proceeded to tell me to simply memorize the information. After meeting with him a second time after another failed attempt on the next essay exam, instead of giving me guidance on how I could improve my essay scores, he mentioned that I didn’t have the right learning capability and mindset to succeed in my major. My major, which is pre-physical therapy, had absolutely nothing to do with getting a decent grade on a history exam. This type of education did not allow me to flourish, instead, this professor destroyed my academic confidence in his particular course as well as made me question whether or not I really did have what it takes to be in my major program. This negative experience is one I will never

A Lazy A Suzanne E. Fry writes “Some students feel that success is owed to them; after all, they did not spend thousand of dollars a year not to yield results”(Fry 10). The Bartebys of the Classroom The Bartlebys of the education system are students who “prefer not to” do their work. I have never understood why someone would come to class and do nothing and expect a good grade. I would assume the student wants to be successful and pass the class they have chosen to take. This can be an issue for composition teachers or teachers in general. The author in the reading nails it on the head when describing the characteristics of a Bartleby student.…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

What makes an instructor so effective? Many people have different thoughts on what makes a good instructor, but according to Thomas Plummer, professor of Germanic and Slavic languages at Brigham Young University and author of the article “Diagnosing and Treating Ophelia Syndrome,” a great teacher will be well known and highly spoken of by the students. Plummer discusses the Ophelia Syndrome which is based off of the play Hamlet, where Ophelia is a girl who is told what to do, say, think, and feel by Polonius, who is a man after power and authority over others. Furthermore, James Paul Gee, a linguist and author of the article “What is Literacy,” tells us that the difference between acquiring knowledge and learning something is when you acquire…

When my first consultation sent me their paper previous to the consultation, I was relieved. The chance to review a paper and have valid points of revision made the idea of talking with a stranger in an unfamiliar medium more than enough to settle my nerves and pushed me to go above and beyond on my revision notes. I had only gone through the paper once, riddling the margins with suggestions and circling spelling errors, or noting global issues on a separate page. When I had finished, the paper was lined with ink. In my mind, I had revised the paper to match how I would have written it: coherent thought patterns; detailed explanations with supporting detail; strong paragraph structure; and most importantly, a valid, well thought out argument.…

Now I was fortunate to have a good cooperating school teacher when I did my student teaching. She had also been a student of this same college professor. Apparently this college professor would go to her school and do some special math lessons on occasion. She told me that he came from the ivory tower of academia. He was accustomed to teaching college level classes and was not particularly interested in the facts and practicalities of the real world.…

During my time in the class I have written a variety of papers that I had little to no experience in. By the end of the semester I have gained crucial experience in not only writing papers, but employing different writing and work strategies during class. The first essay that we were required to write for class was a domain essay. The domain essay was about our major, what experience we have with it, and what we hope to gain from it. This was the first paper of the class and also the first paper I had to write in a while.…

The People that have Shaped Trevor Olson’s, Life Trevor Olson Since I could not come up with a topic for my “example essay”, Mrs. Gast assigned one for me to do. “Who in my life has shaped me into the person I am today?” As I thought about this topic I thought, “Hmm obviously my parent and family, coaches, teachers, activities/sports etc have shaped me,” but, for some reason I couldn’t put into words how they’ve shaped me. So, I chose one thing about me that people in my life have shaped, and that’s my misophonia or selective sound sensitivity syndrome.…

The word, learn, means “to gain knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something.” Throughout their years of school, students feel they have absorbed a great deal of information. However, when they are asked to examine what they really learned, they usually come to a blank or recite something like, “In Fourteen Hundred Ninety-Two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” The students are given no explanation of what that means. Paulo Friere believes that the problem with the education system is that teachers merely tell students to memorize the material, and all the students do is spit the information right back out.…
