One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Introduction Prior to enrolling in the unit ‘Indigenous issues in criminal justice,’ I was only aware of minor details in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders in the criminal justice system. The information I have been previously fed was enforced by negative and stereotypical representations. I had assumed indigenous people were unwilling to conform to expectations of modern society as a retaliation to the actions of the white settlers. However, Indigenous issues in criminal justice has altered my personal perceptions of Australian Indigenous people. In particular matters concerning Indigenous identity, recognizing the value of Indigenous customary law, and the reoccurring matters for Indigenous young people.…

Upon looking at the General Education Competencies that appears on the class syllabus, I decided on which skills are most important to develop in my humble opinion. One skill for example, that I find particularly essential is the ability to research and examine information, resources, and evidence that are both for academic use and those that are not necessarily for academic use. My reasoning is that, being able to have evidential support to what you are stating is critical since what you say typically follows you for the rest of your life.…

This semester I completed my service learning component of the course at Iowa Legal Aid in Ottumwa, Iowa. While I was there, I had pretty easy and boring tasks, especially compared to Noah's experience while he was there as well. Things I did included stapling information packets, shredding and greeting the people who came into the office. Even though these were simple tasks, they were needed because since Iowa Legal Aid is not funded by the government, they get limited funds so they love any help a volunteer can give. By spending my time there did not really teach me a lot about different cultures than my own.…

Explaining this class to someone who hasn’t taken it, would be somewhat difficult due to my bouncing around with words and not staying on track. However, I would do my best to explain it. First, by telling them to take the test that determines what his or her learning patterns were. Then after we had figured out what type of learner they are, go from there. I would go by telling them what all four learning patterns were to the best of my own knowledge, and try to explain to them what they mean for them.…
