Reflective Analysis Of Family Interviewing At Temple Shalom

Description of Family Discussion: During the meal I made for my family and I, we all talked about what I had learned during the whole entire process. I explained to them why the meal I made with healthy for us and I also asked them what they thought about the meal. While explaining to them why the meal was so healthy, I told them about all the nutrients and contents in almost all of the ingredients. We ended up talking about the health benefits in the whole grain pasta I made for around 5 minutes! We compared whole grain pasta to regular pasta. We also discussed what types of foods all of the items were. My mom and my brother thought that the meal was very very good and they expressed this to me. They thought it was very tasty, yet still had …show more content…
This organization is a temple that provides Monday night dinners for up to 50 homeless people. They are offered a full meal, including a main course, up to 3 side dishes, dessert, and waters or lemonades. At Temple Shalom, I helped put the food on the plates to then be served to the homeless people. While I did get to see them, I did not get any interaction with them. This was upsetting to me and my friends, but we still felt great about what we did to help. My volunteer experience at Temple Shalom affected me and the way I think about my access to food because it made me feel super lucky for what I have. All of the monday meals are decently healthy, but not super healthy or anything. They usually consist meatloaf, mash potatoes, gravy, and green beans. While this isn't a terrible meal, it definitely is not the healthiest thing a person could eat. This made me feel very lucky for my access to healthy food and not just good tasting food. My parents shop at places like Mariano's and Whole Foods where they typically buy healthy foods of all different sorts. Since I did this edventure, it has changed the way I talk to my family about food choices and food preparation because I know express my gratitude much more. I know how lucky I am to have all of this healthy food because of this edventure so I started showing my parents a lot more thanks for it. Also, since my edventure, I have been thinking and I am definitely going to …show more content…
It was pretty tasty and super healthy! The best part of the experience for me was definitely doing the actual cooking and eating with my mom and brother. The cooking part was fun for me and I realized I actually sort of enjoy cooking. It was very satisfying to watch my food become a great healthy meal. I enjoyed eating with my family because it was nice to actually sit down with them and just eat and talk. In my house, we are all super busy and don't typically have time to sit and eat all together. Because of this, my meal that I made felt super special because we had time to talk and hear about new updates in all of our lives. The worst part of the experience for me was probably doing the grocery shopping. This was hard because I found it stressful to make sure I got all the correct ingredients especially considering there were a lot of them. I think that the pasta and drink portion of the project went super well. This is because they were obviously both healthy, but they still turned out tasty. The chicken part of my project could have gone better because while it tasted pretty good, it looked sort of gross. It looked bad because some parts of it were sort of mashed up and not very pretty looking. My meal was almost everything I wanted it to be, other than the chicken part and the fact that my dad could not attend because he was called in to the hospital for his job as a doctor. In order to make my meal even better, I could have not

Many children and adults spend less time preparing food and more time eating processed food or fast food (Ng, Popkin, and Smith, 2013). If families and individuals learned how to prepare food, then they are more likely to use the skill. My mother taught me how to prepare my lunches before the week started. This has helped me eat healthy and save money by not eating fast food during college. Creating nutrition and cooking classes would also align with Health People 2020’s goals because they are targeting teaching the community healthy behaviors and habits, along with improving the behaviors in all groups of the…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Sharing food with my family helps us learn the importance of family and cultural traditions. In my family while having dinner we are not allowed to use phones because my dad says that mealtime is family time, so we should only concentrate on eating and talking with family members. Extended family gatherings around food are part of Indian tradition. Our extended family gathering is where more than two or three families get together and make our traditional foods. As my dad says, nobody knows what tomorrow holds so spend time with the people who love you and the people you love.…

Prior to conducting this experiment, my hypothesis was that I was going to offend all of the people involved, so I prepared myself mentally for the backlash and negative feedback. Surprisingly, there was a range of emotions and reactions to me breaking this folkway. Emotions ranged from being completely offended and disgusted to finding it hysterical. The reactions from the people fluctuate from being angry and notifying the manager to asking me to join them for dinner. The experiment was conducted at least two times in both the bar and restaurant section, except for Sunday the 18th.…

The Interview The interview process went well. Even though I am familiar with this family, I still conducted the interview professionally. I started out by stating my name, that I am a Bachelor of Nursing Student and that the purpose of the interview is to learn more about the family and that everything discussed will be confidential. I began by asking Melissa questions on the structure and composition of her family, and I drew out a rough draft of a genogram as she was answering my questions and providing me with information.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…

To assist is to help someone with money, resources, or information. The food pantry has allowed me to assist impecunious people who may not be as blessed as me. The food pantry broadened my mind as I was able to connect with people who came, and earn a new understanding of the benefits that people can gain from serving their community. Through my community hours at the food pantry I realized what my work did for me, the community and how it was throughout history.…

When I was in high school, my mom was diagnosed with stage-III breast cancer. I still remember the doctor explaining to my family that her being overweight was a potential contributing factor. At that moment, I realized the importance of a healthy diet; seeing my mother struggle to survive each day further inspired me to pursue a nutritional science major. Even then, I imagined that I would one day become a dietitian, which would give me the chance to help sick people like my mom prolong their lives. My ambition was to facilitate healthy eating lifestyles in order to reduce chronic disease.…
