In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives. I also provide patients with conversation and listen to their stories and concerns when family or care providers are busy or

Volunteer Hours Today Jenna and I volunteered at the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society. We spent three hours walking the dogs and playing with the kittens. At first I was hesitant to spend three hours at the humane society, but the time went by faster than I had assumed. The first place I went in the shelter was the older dog room, and instantly I was taken aback by how many dogs there were. There was this one older dog snuggled up in the back of the kennel, it had the most depressing look on its face and all I wanted to do was hug it…

My response to this scenario is based on my experience with volunteers at the Tyler Texas Corps. At this Corps, volunteers were used in various Corps programs and activities. The Corps relied on the help of these volunteers, however, for all their advantages and benefits there were many challenges and drawbacks. Managing the massive amount of volunteers required much responsibility more than the “Volunteer Coordinator” could handle alone. The challenges with volunteers is that the majority of volunteers are short term or seasonal volunteers.…

Service learning, volunteerism, and community service are similar since they offer help with the needs of the environment to society or communities. While working on those needs, we get to learn and gain not only knowledge, but a formation of moral and civic values. By performing service learning, volunteerism, or a community service, we have the opportunity to interact with people who failed to get a job that month, people who do not have sufficient resources, and with members of communities that are not legal in this country. In any of these three services it is expected the exchange of material things such as money, but rather a pleasant satisfaction of being able to help others. The three concepts mentioned before are different because service learning involves a method of attaching a social commitment to the learning of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in order to be competent, while being useful to others.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

I have opted to donate some of my time to give back to my community that I live in. In Mt. Zion Illinois, lays an assisted living facility known as the “Glenwood.” When I went into their office to ask them if it was permissible for me to do volunteer work, they made me aware that this is an organization is a for profit organization. That means all the employees are getting paid to do all of the work that they do, and the price to live here is going to be more expensive for the residents due to having staff members available 24/7 around the clock. I asked, “how much charity work is done here,” and Lisa Schmitz the Administrator said, “There is not many people that opt to come in for free other than churches and some bands that hold activities for free, most of the people that come in get paid a certain amount.”…
