Last Saturday afternoon I received a phone call from a client’s relative placement stating that the child had been raped while on an overnight visit with her mother. The child’s aunt stated she didn’t know what to do and had never been in this type of situation. After ensuring the child was in a safe place I requested for the aunt to call the local police as I was preparing to go to the child’s location to assist with taking the child to the emergency room to have an exam. I immediately notified the FCM, my field instructor, and the child’s therapist of the situation, all agreed I should be with the family and child to provide support as the therapist was not able to be present due to being out of town. The FCM approved for my field instructor to provide crisis intervention for the child if it was needed. Upon arriving at the location, I spoke with the fourteen year old child as we waited for the police to arrive. I sought guidance from the FCM and my field instructor prior to arriving at the home as I felt nervous about handling my first crisis situation and wanted to ensure I was handling things appropriately. I was unsure of what to say to the child and family to support them. Much to my surprise the family was relieved to see me and the child immediately started telling what she had experienced. I felt compassion for the child. There was also thoughts of disbelieve that this had occurred to a child that I was working with.
