Reflections on Writing
As I bring my third term at Southern New Hampshire University to a close, I have come to realize that writing is a lot like working a jigsaw puzzle. When I first look looked at it, there are pieces everywhere; some were upside down or sideways and there was no structure yet. I had a vague sense of what the picture looked like in my head, but I was exactly sure how to cause all the pieces to fit together to replicate that image. English composition has taught me the necessary mechanics to complete this writing puzzle. The creation of a thesis statement, the difference between narrative and persuasive essays, and organization are the elements of the puzzle which have assisted my growth as an academic writer during this

If I do not have all of the pieces or a nice solid surface on which to work my puzzle, I will not succeed. The same is true of the writing process. I previously did not understand what a thesis statement was, why I needed to create one, or why it was important. In module two we learned about the thesis statement, how that is a specific clam about something being written about(Learning Source). I have learned that it sets up the purpose and direction of every piece of writing and serves to keep me on track and focused on the goal of the paper. I also learned that the thesis can be revised to accommodate the new picture that has evolved through the writing process. This concept seemed very foreign to me during my narrative writing because I assumed that I had to make my paper fit my thesis. My folly became clear when Professor Anderson provided feedback on the initial draft of my narrative essay stating that my thesis was no longer matching my paper and needed revision and focus (Anderson, Personal Conversation). I also worked with the writing center coaches to acquire more aid and clarity on why I could not make my paper to work. As with the puzzle, I learned that cannot put two different pictures together and expect them to fit; I was trying to put too many concepts into one paper. Once I revised my thesis and focused it to a single vision, I was able to effectively revise my narrative essay to match that vision, reflect on what I learned from my experience, and articulate a more global lesson for my

Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses the student’s revision strategies on her journal College Composition and Communication: a compilation of some of her articles. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles from Nancy 's journal: Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) with Laura Saltz as cowriter, Between the Drafts (1992), and the Novice as Expert (2004). Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. Between the Drafts (1992) narrates her personal experience with revision strategies. The Novice as Expert: Writing the freshmen (2004) examines how first-year college students—Sommers believes— should approach writing.…

During writing I run into problems with coming up with a thesis; the trouble with this is that I almost always confuse what a thesis statement is and I don’t specifically identify my stance within the essay. I do not have problems with reaching page length but with that I come across errors such as repetition. I have noticed in my writings that I repeat myself a lot, I would explain a topic/quote, but…

Dear University of Alabama Academic Community, The first part of this semester was nothing like I imagined English 101 would be like. Since I did not write many papers in high school, it was a struggle for me to challenge myself as a writer. In the beginning it was nerve racking and stressful as I wrote, but as time went on it started to feel more natural. For class I have written a summary of Henry Wechsler’s, “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” and discussed the Pros and Cons to his article in a response paper.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I worry about how the essay looks, and how it’s read. I worry about repeating words forgetting the most important part; whether my ideas are repeated, presented properly, concluded, or even modified while I rewrite my essay. Reading Sommer’s essays about scholarly writings, and revision strategies, they confirm what I believe about student’s failure to take their own ideas into account while focusing on thesis statements and authorities words. However It challenged what I had assumed that students think of revising as a process that “Requires lexical changes but not semantic changes”(Sommers 382) While to professional writers it’s a process of “Finding the form or the shape of the argument”(Sommers 384). Sommers brings many important strategies of writings under the consideration of students, and helps introduce them to future scholarly writings in…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
