In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

The North Dakota Association of Honor Society has four criteria that all members should possess and applicants must meet all four to be inducted: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Since I have been given the opportunity to fill out the application for the Honor Society and write this essay, I clearly have demonstrated skill in the Scholarship area. However, that still leaves three other areas. First is the area of Leadership. I have been entrusted by my peers to serve in various leadership positions both in the school and through other activities that I am involved with, which range from Class President to serving as a member of the school's Peer Leader Team.…

Our project teams theory we decided upon Social Disorganization Theory due to the the first part of the theory involves why some areas of a city or county have higher crime rates. We feel as a group that the high poverty levels in the downtown area play a part in the higher crime rates and in youth development within the community. The high poverty areas with youth in them tend to lead the youth to make a decision of living in poverty or turning to the streets to make money. The second factor or this theory is when all organizations including law enforcement, churches, schools, and afterschool programs work together as one they will help combat the problem of crimes in certain areas of the city and county. This theory along with our project teams idea and the program already in place at the YMCA is going to help youth engage in positive behaviors away from the streets and hopefully ignite a positive outlook on education.…

Every person has different strategies when it comes to learning and working either alone or collaboratively within a group. I consider myself a doer. I take pride in diving straight into the workload and scratching something off of my to-do list. Awareness of what is happening, who is getting what done, and the accuracy of all materials being produced within a group is extremely important to me. Because of how motivated I am in a group to complete the task at hand, I am quick to give my ideas and visions for the final product which makes me the usual group leader.…

As a collaborator, my strengths were that I made sure that everything got done on time and that it was done right. My weaknesses were that I didn’t really talk to my group as much as I should have and I kind of didn’t put responsibility on anyone but myself. Group work requires talking to others, otherwise you’ll just pull all of the weight and the other group members will get a free ride. Honestly, I feel comfortable controlling the whole process of group work and have people just follow what I say so I know that things are getting done right. This is probably not good, but I don’t feel like I can trust groups because a lot of the time people don’t do what they’re supposed to.…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…

Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. This makes sense, because in a professional environment, the ability to communicate, listen and contribute within a group leads to success and the achievement of goals. However, none have gone on as long as this project, making it a more realistic example of working on a team. Junior year of college is definitely a crazy time, as we are forced to balance heavy workloads with extracurriculars and recruiting.…
