How did your instruction meet the expectations of the Instructional Standards of the NEPF?
An expectation within our lessons at my school is to identify the NEPF Instructional standards in our lessons plans and how we anticipate meeting these standards through our instruction. This is my second year writing lessons plans that includes identifying the NEPF Instructional standards. Prior to this course, I found it a bit awkward placing these standards in my lessons. I felt that the template we were provided was a bit restrictive in the fact that it only identified one instructional standard for each of the components of an effective lesson. I knew, due to the fact of my work with the roll out of these standards, that each standard can be embedded in a variety of ways within each of the components of an effective lesson. When reflecting upon each of my strategies throughout this course, I learned how to effectively communicate this through answering the “Support of NEPF High Leverage Instructional Standard” question in each of my Strategy Reflections. My observer noted that my students “helped each other in the learning process”, “enjoyed the lesson”, “felt able to participate”, and weren’t “afraid to risks”. In addition to conferring with my observer prior to this lesson, I communicate regularly with my ELL students’ teachers regarding their coursework. Often these teachers mention my ELL students’ hesitancy to participate in group discussion and learning. That was not the case in the lesson that they completed with me for this observation.
