Reflection: Using Evidence Based Practice In My Clinical Experience

Decent Essays
First, l am thankful for all who have contributed to seeing me to the end. I also hope to continue to reflect on myself whether by journaling, volunteering and other activities to promote quality of care using evidence based practice in my clinical experience. The fact that the program was online worked for me, as it gave me the flexibility and time to complete all class work on time. I would suggest that the school have a group of past students that can encourage other students and maybe serve as mentors. I would hope the faculty keep on having the weekly discussion board as this helps all students especially when you think you have no idea of what you are doing. Reading a peer’s discussion, may help another person. I have already recommended,

If a nursing intervention follows the nursing process, e.g., assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate – it demonstrates the clinical reasoning that supports the patient care. As cited by Alfaro-Lefevre (2012) Skip the principles of assessment and diagnosis and it’s easy to jump to conclusions, miss risks, and give care based on assumptions rather than evidence. Assessment errors and omissions are a major cause of adverse outcomes. If you fail to plan before implementation, the risk of adverse outcomes also increases. Skip evaluation, and reflective nursing practice (not to mention patient safety) goes out the door (p. 1).…

Introduction Variation exists in every industry and there are different types of variation. Patients may use the data collected about variations to determine what physician to schedule an appointment with for a medical condition, what facility to have a procedure at based on outcomes, what percentage of patients have complications, or even look at what facilities are using more of evidence-based care approaches. The focus in healthcare is on three different types of variation that may influence the care of a patient, the operations of a healthcare facility, and influence healthcare providers on decisions that they may make with care for a patient. The concept of variation within the medical field has been in discussion since 1938 in England and Wales (Joshi, Ransom, Nash, & Ransom, 2014).…

Since there are numerous types of illnesses, there are also different kinds medical treatments where some are more effective for one patient but which patient but many not work for another one. According to Martin (2008), it is easy to exploit a patient when they are in a vulnerable state because the patient is more willing to try anything. When a patient is in a state of vulnerability, it is important for the doctor to steer the patient to the right direction of treatment. He mentions how Jason Vale was sentenced to serve sixty-three months in prison and three years of supervised release for advertising and selling a medicine called Laetrile to cancer patients. Martin mentions how, “There is no scientific evidence that Laetrile offers anything but false hope for cancer…

From midterm to current my CI allowed me to handle more of her caseload, observe online documentation, and weekly progress reports on her patients. She encouraged questions, and thoroughly explained why certain treatments and activities were better than others. She allowed for open communication of patient interventions, which made me feel comfortable enough to take on more of her case load and contributed to my visual, and hands on style of learning. From my initial visit to current my CI has ensured my environment promotes growth at my clinical site.…

Evidence-based practice (EBP) does improve the safety measures and quality care for patients. The situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) tool has been and continues to be an important means in facilitating the exchange of information between health care disciplines. Evidence-based research has shown that effective and efficient communication between healthcare professionals has improved dramatically by using the SBAR tool (Eberhardt, 2014). Thorough listening, effective communication, and sharing of information between health care team members is an important process that enables patients to be cared for appropriately.…

This week’s bible passage made me reflect on my clinical rotation at the clinic while shadowing a nurse who was doing an anatomical procedure to an offender who accidentally fell and injured his head. Anatomical is the procedure that any nurse will do before they will assign any offender to segregated or isolated locked rooms or to any offender who needs to be assessed after an event that resulted in an injury. There was a bruising and a “bump” on the back side of the offenders head due to his bad fall. The swollen “bump” measured 3.4 cm. in width by 4cm in length.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

Within the first two weeks of clinical, I believe there were a few aspects of my practice that were successful. One of these aspects involved my ability to properly irrigate a nasogastric tube. I see this as a strength because when asked to complete this task by my co-caring nurse, I informed her that I have never done this before, in which she responded by guiding me through the process and answering any questions I had. From this, I was able to correctly irrigate the patient’s tube as well as learn a new skill. Another aspect I believe to have showcased my success as a student nurse occurred when my co-caring nurse showed me how to reset a Sigma Spectrum IV Pump.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. During my time there, nurses often approached me to provide small learning experiences and teach students how to be efficient. When a nurse on the unit asked for help with a bed bath for a patient with whom I was not familiar, I agreed. I wanted to get as much experience as I could. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…

Nursing is a lifelong learning. To grow professionally in nursing I need to reflect and analyse on my clinical experiences. It will help me to improve my professional practice, gain more knowledge and skills, and increase my critical thinking abilities and confidence in dealing with difficult situations. To reflect on what I had learned during my past work experiences I will use Gibbs reflective cycle. It was my first week of work as an Operating Theatre (OT) nurse.…
