Reflection Revisited: The Class Collage By Jeff Sommers

Introduction The first article being compared is “Reflection Revisited: The Class Collage” written by Jeff Sommers from the Journal of Basic Writing. This scholarly article is about a college English professor who gives an assignment to his class about reflection. As the assignment progresses he quickly realizes that the responses he had received from his students were not what he had imagined. The second article is called “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” written by Victoria Rideout and published by Common Sense Media. This scholarly article talks about the many ways to market to teens and children, such as what strategies should be implemented when it comes to advertisement.

Identification There are many similarities and differences between the two articles just by appearance alone. Just reading the title one can conclude which discourse community each article belongs to. The “Reflection Revisited: The Class Collage” article is from an English/teaching discourse while the “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” article is from a marketing/business discourse.

The English discourse uses a lot of block quotes taken form various papers to show evidence from an eyewitness point of view, while the business discourse uses facts and statistical data to support their claim. With these different forms of citations one can tell what the goals are for each community are. For example using just data mixed with a handful of numbers from multiple sources suggests that the goals of the advertisement community is to sell to the consumer with the use of reliable data. Using the perception from his student’s further supports the English professor discoveries when he assigned the reflections assignment. This suggests that the goal of the English discourse is to look for improvement of writing and research and apply it for future
