Megan(M): That’s not true I took philosophy 101, I know I exist!
G: Well, how do you even know what knowledge is?
M: What is knowledge? Well first let me distinguish it from an opinion so your wise old brain can understand. Plato, a philosopher, wrote Republic ages ago and wrote about an allegory of a cave, it shows us that opinions and knowledge are two different things. People in the cave see shadows, and claim to know what they are, yet they really do not know because they do not go out and investigate said shadows. They merely believe it is there because of …show more content…
G: Belief and knowledge are two different things, yes?
M: Well, I can believe I am Cinderella, but I cannot know it for certain. I can have knowledge, but I cannot know it for certain. Only being able to think about such things proves my existence.
G: But what if I have thoughts deceive you? How will you know you have deceiving thoughts?
M: Well, yes, I could be deceived, but just being able to think thoughts allows me to know I exist and can in fact think, Descartes simplifies it in Meditation II, saying; “Sensing is just thinking.”
G: So you believe you exist because you can think, but you claim no knowledge on getting any empirical evidence through the senses? If I grab my hand I can feel my other arm, yet you believe this is not evidence that I truly exist?
M: Correct, I can only know things through mental inspection. This could potentially all be a dream, because I do not know what the world looks like from your eyes and vice versa, but I can think therefore I know I exist.
G: So you claim you cannot know if you have a body, you said you are a student of CUW, can you prove …show more content…
I believe God created us and because of this gave me the ability to think, and to reason. I know my ideas come from reason not a material object like my campus ID proving my existence. If my reasoning came from a material object it would negate God, and make him a deceiver, which is untrue. So I know material objects like my student ID exist, it is just a matter of where I placed my ID. To further my explanation of God’s goodness let me share with you what Descartes say about the skeptics of God, “some would rather deny that there is an omnipotent God than believe that everything else is uncertain.” In essence, sometimes it is easier to not look for an answer but just continue to question everything into a
