I had to step out of my own world and into the culture of an ethnic group I thought I knew about. In order to achieve success with the given task, I had to effectively gather information from a variety of sources and then pass the information along in written form. As unassuming as the task sounds, I was also required to be creative and artistic with my work.
At one point I felt that I understood what was being asked of me, I once again found that I was incorrect in my thinking. The next task given to me was to write a scholarly research paper with an added twist. I then had to write a letter to an individual and provide the same information in simpler terms. This was not quite as mundane a task as it appeared; switching literacy levels can be a very difficult task. I found it can be very intimidating to write for a peer and then convey the same information to person who may not understand even the most basic of medical …show more content…
I was able to grasp the idea that not everyone is just like me. There are those who will read the same thing I have and interpret it in a different manner. Others may not even be able to understand the words that are printed, let alone the ideas that might be presented.
Through the entire class I was forced to look at the world around me in a different perspective. Instead of becoming angry or defensive, I tried to understand why the information and material was important. I found that when I spoke to my coworkers about the class, they had different opinions regarding the information. This forced me to rethink some of the ideas that I had regarding the material that was offered in the class. I began to realize that there are many different perspectives of just one simple topic, and it is possible that all of them are right.
Once I had my epiphany, I became aware that the different skills introduced to me in this course will aid me becoming a better nurse. I am becoming aware that those around me may not view the world the same way I do. Now that I am aware of this, I can begin to adapt how I interact with those is different
