My breath is calm, my pulse low. I am standing at the edge of the 50 meter pool. The sun is setting and the sky in my back is still red, but I look already into a dark blue if I lift my head. With the light breeze blowing around my naked feet’s I start to shiver. With all the visitors gone, it is time for me to swim my laps. I try to clear my mind and prepare myself for the distance I will swim today. Pyramid training which equals the distance of 3.900 Meters (= 2.5 Miles). It means I will start with one lap. Then a 30 seconds break. After that I will swim 2 laps. Followed by another 30 seconds break. This circle will rise up to 12 laps and after that I can relax for 3 minutes. Then the circle will decline to 1 lap. I hate it. But I have to do it in order to become a better swimmer, to improve my endurance and my sprints. I know I am able to accomplish my goal by practicing deliberately for it. This way of thinking sets me apart from other people – my mindset. Science differs between the fixed and the growth mindset. My mom will never forget my first swim lesson as I begged her to go home. I cried and clung to her as if I would die if I would just touch the water and was terrified of the unknown. I still remember the smell of chlorine which crawled up my nose as soon as we opened the entrance of the building as well as the noise of bare feet walking and running over the tiles. The Aquarell colored tiles on the bottom of the pool which seemed to be not 2, but 200 meters deep. It was a miracle the teacher got me into the water. Neither mom or me can say how he did it, but he did. I was first in a state of a fixed mindset. I couldn’t swim and why should I be able to? Because I am and always was pretty competitive I stuck to the swim lessons and received my “seahorse“, the badge which proves you are able to swim. However, I didn’t want to swim in my free time

What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming. Even though I started school with an exorbitant amount of homework, my parents and I swam at an olympic size pool religiously every Sunday.…

It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
