Synthesis Of Sustainability

As a Biology major, working towards a minor in sustainability, I have learned to appreciate the moments when my mind engages with a new-found sense of knowledge and understanding. Many people think sustainability is all about saving the planet and recycling. They are all thinking of being environmentally friendly they can be sustainable. But, there is no universal definition of what sustainability means. Instead, there are many different views on what it is and how it can be achieved. Sustainability involves decision making and action taking that are in the interests of maintaining the natural world, with emphasis on preservation of the environment to support humanity. To be sustainable, elementary knowledge is not enough to make well-informed …show more content…
I had never heard of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment's (MEA), but I found it most interesting when I read a synthesis of "Ecosystems and Human Well-Being." I found interesting information that could be used for changing the course of the ecosystem. This synthesis explained how humanity is taking advantage of the biosphere for its own well-being, rather than taking care of it for the well-being of the whole world and all its systems. I learned, in the past fifty years' humans have changed the environment more than any other period in human history (MEA 2005). The path humanity is making for economic development and human well-being increases the damage done on ecosystem services (MEA 2005). Many extremely vulnerable groups of people are unequipped to handle the major changes in the ecosystems, that might occur. From what I thought about sustainability, it about how I was affecting the planet. I never thought about how my actions could negatively affect someone else that lived in a different area in the world in different conditions. The eight goals of the MEA are to eliminate poverty and hunger, attain universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve mental health, combat HIV/Aids and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development (MEA 2005). Humanity may hinder these goals by overexploiting resources, …show more content…
I now have a broader understanding of what sustainability is and how it can be different from person to person. I always thought that recycling and using different sources of electricity was the best way to help "save the planet." I had no idea the MEA report existed and was informing people of the problems humanity is causing to, not only, the environment, but other people as well. Not everyone has the same opinions though because that depends on people's worldviews and how they see sustainability. I am more aware of problems that climate change, deforestation, and even lawn care can cause and I want to be more vocal and active in trying to prevent these problems. I hope to gain more knowledge on humanities carrying capacity and how the world can become more universally educated. All people deserve the right to an education because it allows more variety of ideas and beliefs to be heard. I hope to see and participate in further communication on sustainability in order to increase the positive change towards a more sustainable thinking and

“Isn’t it ironic how the earth would thrive without us, [humans], but we would not survive without the earth?” Yet, we still manage to choose non-sustainable products and lifestyles regardless of its repercussions in our habitat because it is more convenient way to live. It is undebatable that nature is a beautiful thing, and when it is destroyed, unlike various things in the modern world that can be easily replaced, we can not replace nature. It also undeniable that we have caused great damage to our environment that resulted into endangering animals, higher sea levels that swallows shorelines, and stronger calamities that destroys homes. We are destroying the very cause of our survival.…

I truly don't mean to be patronizing, this may be a topic of which you are already familiar, but I will say, a great deal has been written about the manner in which neoliberal economics have co-opted "sustainability" to suit their needs. This construction has been so thoroughly propagated in the public discourse as to be uncritically accepted by the "masses. " I would argue that "sustainability" as such, is almost entirely devoid of meaning, it's an empty shell of phrase that be reconstituted to fit every situation. Barbara Harris-White writes, “sustainable capitalism is a fiction.” Sustainability has never been given a testable definition… it has been watered down to ‘resources sustainably available in the environment’ and even leached into mere ‘growth.'”…

We believe mankind is responsible for a myriad of modern ecological atrocities. Our primary targets are not human beings, however, innocent bystanders are not of our concern. We believe our earth is in such a sad state due to overdevelopment, as well as inevitable human error. Human beings are losing touch with their most primitive roots, people now longer know or understand the concept of becoming one with nature. Modern technology, and advancement of infrastructure has led to the ultimate demise of our ecological standards, which MUST be adhered to.…

Christian R Weisser speaks more about the idea of what sustainability is and how is important for society to be aware of it. Both articles touch on the ideas that there are people out there helping change Earth for the better, and want to make earth sustainable for the future. Coming from an Orange County family with a traditional western lifestyle my educational focus on the responsible consumption and protection of resources has been, and will continue to be, a journey. I chose Sustainability as my major early in my Junior year of high school when I took a close look at what I was passionate about, where I excelled, how I was spending my time and the people with whom I surrounded myself. Mr. Paddock, my Statisticsstats teacher influenced my decision to Minor in Statistics by noticing my aptitude in his class and demonstrating how a good understanding of correlations enhances almost any career choice. My career aspiration is to work with organizations that promote social justice and eradicate environmental racism by providing equal availability to clean air, water and resources to people of all demographics.…

The Earth is currently facing detrimental environmental issues. These issues have been evident for decades; however, many people have continuously denied them to be problematic or even their existence entirely. While these critics have managed to get away with the rejection of these problems for many years, it is no longer deniable that the issue of environmental degradation is very real and in need of immediate action. Much of the population has come to understand this, and have executed a variety of modest attempts to increase environmental sustainability. However, these efforts have demonstrated to be of minimal effect in solving the large-scale issues directly causing the degradation.…
