The hot Hawaiian sun beat down on me as I boarded the boat with my sister. Last night, Christina, my sister, who is in college, came home for a day, and today we are going to go on our annual snorkeling trip. When I get to college, I want to make the college swim team, just like Christina. I was ecstatic because I was barely able to convince Christina to come with me. She had a very important test to study for. So, we compromised and she took her study material along with her. When we got on the boat, a lifeguard greeted us and gave all the passengers on the boat a safety presentation.
I was too excited to pay attention. “...And definitely don’t jump into the water if a passenger is overboard, because what’s worse than one passenger overboard? Two passengers overboard!” Helping the passenger overboard would be my job,” he finished, “Now everybody go, sit down and enjoy the ride.”

Minutes passed, feeling like eternity. Every second felt like a year. When I thought I wouldn’t be able to stand it anymore, the lifeguard yelled, “WE ARE HERE!” I jumped out of my seat and went to grab snorkeling gear for me and Christina. Christina pretended not to hear the lifeguard and continued reading. The lifeguard passed out life jackets for us to put on. When I got back, I placed the snorkeling gear in her hand and firmly said, “You are coming whether you like it or not.”
“No. I said no,” she says, exasperated.
“Please!” I whined like a little kid, “Do this for me! Mom said to do it for me!” I put on my puppy face again.
Christina sighed, “Fine. Have it your way.” I smiled. I put on my snorkeling gear and looked over to Christina, who was having trouble putting on her gear. “Do you need help?” I asked

Burnt, peeling skin slipped off my sun beaten arm. A salty tear dropped down my face, and I swallowed it, soaking in every bit of bitter liquid I could taste. I squinted, the sun capturing my green eyes at a glare. I reached over and grabbed my sunglasses, protecting my damaged eyes from the harmful UV rays. Suddenly, the world came into view.…

My mom, dad, and I wandered around, until one of the instructors approached us. “Hello and welcome to Thompson Island Outward Bound!” In a surprisingly joyful voice, even though all the kids around her look terrified as they hugged and talked to their parents about the upcoming journey. “Hi, we are here with our daughter, Samantha, for the Thompson Island Outward Bound Girls Kayaking course.” My mom announced emphatically, as I shriveled up with nervousness and embarrassment.…

This past summer, I underwent many swim tests and was finally offered a lifeguarding position at a local town beach and waterpark. I eagerly accepted the offer and was excited to start. When I arrived on my first day, I was informed that there had not been a save in our shallow water facility for the past nine years. But, that nine year save streak ended this summer. A coworker noticed that a man had went underwater and quickly blew a whistle to inform everyone at our facility that there was an emergency.…

Yosemite When I was seven, my family and I entered the enchanted forest known as Yosemite for a campout. It seemed as trees decided to invade the barren Earth. As I stepped out of the car, the smell of sticky, brown sap running down a maple tree smashed my face like an arrow pinning its target to a barrier. The sap threatened to suffocate me with it’s sulfurous smell.…

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…
