Introduction To Psychology

“Psychology, unlike chemistry, unlike algebra, unlike literature, is an owner 's manual for your own mind. It 's a guide to life. What could be more important than grounding young people in the scientific information that they need to live happy, healthy, productive lives? To have good relationships”(Goldstein, pg.1)? As a twenty-three year old coming into an Introduction to Psychology class I did not know what to expect. I was excited to learn all the different “chapters” of psychology. I was eager to know what makes a person the way they are and why they behave the way they do. Before taking this class, when I thought about psychology as a whole, I thought of hypnosis and psychologists that are there to help people who might need an extra boost or just a listening ear. As the end of the semester is rapidly approaching, I have come to the conclusion that I have an all new outlook on what psychology is all about. As a second semester freshman, I have not had a lot of experience dealing with psychology. As I continue on with school, I want to eventually become an Elementary School teacher. How a person thinks, behaves, and feels on an everyday basis is not even half of what psychology really is. I have a better understanding of myself, and people around me. Coming from a person who has dealt with depression and anxiety since I was about fifteen years old, it is almost a relief to know more about what causes depression and the different types of anxieties. It is like a breath of fresh air to learn what may have caused my depression and what is going on in my brain and what neurotransmitters I am
