My Field Experience: My Practicum Experience

Improved Essays
It seems strange looking back on practicum and remembering how much I was dreading it before I started. I was so nervous, but I very quickly fell in love with my kiddos and teaching as a profession. I learned so much from the students, my clinical supervisor, and the rest of the school staff. I will carry these lessons with me through my remaining field experience opportunities and into my career. I am beyond excited to see what my next field experience will teach me and what amazing teachers and students I will get to work with.

It is essential for me to witness and take part in more classroom management activities. My clinical supervisor is an amazing teacher, but she is the first to admit she picked Kindergarten because she is a “cupcake.” Meaning she is sweet and soft on discipline. My hope is that next semester I am placed with a teacher that can provide a real-life example of quality classroom management, including engaging students, time management, classroom organization, and behavior management. While this semester taught me that there are many different teaching styles and no perfect way, I did see the importance of organization. This is an area where my clinical supervisor struggles and I definitely saw this impact students and learning. The classroom always had an underlying sense of chaos and much of this was due to misplaced materials or inadequate planning. This chaos was also added to because of the lack of consequences. While positive reinforcement works wonders in the classroom, particularly in kindergarten, there are times when students need to have privileges revoked. This is something I imagine I will see more often in the later grades and I look forward to observing real-world instances of handling discipline with firm compassion. Within my practicum class, I was not offered many opportunities to teach the whole class, so I have not yet built confidence in doing so. My hope is that next semester involves teaching more as a whole group and more chances for me to create and teach my own

All teachers performed great jobs at creating a unified classroom of learners. The students have favorable moments to act as chiefs and helpmates with individual responsibilities; their jobs are placed in a pocket folder on the wall. Students could participate in classroom activities in a variety of ways. Ms. Atkinson, Bell, Waldoky, and Gullekerson used a rocking chair during their teachable moments. I noticed around the classrooms, the teachers modeled supportive interactions with the students, and encouraged prosocial behavior.…

My practicum experience was in grades k-4 as I was with a teacher who was a resource teacher for students who nee extra help in reading and math. My experience was great as I got so see a huge diversity of students and how the teacher interacted towards each one differently depending on their needs. The summer I turned fourteen, my cousins and I went to visit our rural village, where we had a unique experience. We noticed a lot of the children were turning bald and wondered why. With closer inspection I recognized ringworms. We alarmed their parents but they didn’t seem worried; so we just took the children with us to the local infirmary for treatment. We started checking all the other children for ringworms and we also brought them up to date in their vaccinations.…

Overall Reflection Where I began the semester thinking practicum class was just a place where I and others could complain freely about our placements, that notion began to change very quickly. I learned that while practicum class is a safe place to share our frustrations and concerns, it is also a place where we can learn to cope and confront those frustrations and concerns. Our class is more of a professional development group than a class, in which students can digest and unify important classroom material with the practical experience our placements provide. I also fully appreciate the diversity of our class, I have learned so much from others’ experiences not just at their placement but their life experience as well.…

Journal Eight Upon completion of week eight of the practicum experience, I have considered the skills that have been mastered and have identified areas of needed growth. This week's journal will describe the achieved goals and areas that require continued growth. As I have progressed through the practicum experience, I am beginning to become more confident in the assessment of patients and the development of differentials. This reflection can help identify areas that will need further improvement (Shaughnessy, Allen, & Duggan, 2017). Areas of continued growth are leaning all of the treatment guidelines and standards of care for each condition.…

My practicum experience in this class was quite an interesting one. I didn 't know how it was going to work, but quickly saw it was easy to figure out. I did have a few mishaps because of the way my resource class operate, I often have to change my whole lesson at the last minute. So even though I have written a lesson plan and scripted it out, it is usually geared towards their IEP goals or missing basic skills they need, when I see most of my students not getting something in class I chose to focus on what they need…

Preparing for the first day of clinical experience was very exciting. My goal going into the clinical site was without expectations, aside from making every interaction as an experience that is positive and educational. When arriving to the nursing /rehabilitation home, I was a lot calmer, then I thought. The fragrance of the institution was a new fragrance for me, not sure if there is specific word to describe it, but for me it will be forever the memory of the fragrance I noticed as I took several steps into the institution. In terms of visual aspect, it reminded me of the prior institutions that was relatable to this one.…

Throughout my time spent at the Goshen school district, I have learned so much about, not only others, but about myself. I never imagined that I would, or could have performed in a school setting with children for my practicum. It was just something I didn’t think applied to me, or my degree. When I left my first practicum, I was planning on finding a facility to fulfill my second internship at that offered both mental health, and addiction treatment services. Although, I still feel that I wish I would have found a facility near me that offered what I was looking for, I am beyond grateful for the experience that working for the district gave me.…
