Final Paper: A Reflective Essay on Intro to Outdoor Education.
At the conclusion of this course, my understanding of Outdoor Education has grown tremendously. Coming into the beginning of the semester I had a very basic understanding of Outdoor Education, and its position in the greater professional world. My basic understanding consisted of the ideas and philosophy behind outdoor recreation and that was it. Now, at the conclusion of the semester, my understanding has grown tremendously. I now understand that Outdoor Education is so much more than just outdoor recreation. It includes environmental, educational, therapeutic, and recreational aspects. Personally, I would define outdoor education as learning, but with a new and honed in focus

These academic plans come into play directly with my professional hopes. It is my hope to one day open a camp for youth who fight with anxiety and depression and cannot seek the guidance of professional help due to the stereotype placed upon them by their friends and family, who may not agree with counseling, or those who may not have the finances available to pursue professional help. It has become very real to me that there is a stigma that comes with struggling with depression or anxiety and seeking out help for yourself. Within this camp, instead of having individuals come in and train as a camp counselor, we will have licensed counselors there serving as the camp counselors. These councilors will offer healthy coping mechanisms, and a listening ear. However, once the youth leave the camp, they are not left out in the cold. This camp becomes a community for them. Ideally the community would feed into a coffee shop type atmosphere. A safe place for those who attended the camp, where youth can come back and fellowship with one another, but also be encouraged in the fact that they are not walking through this …show more content…
It not only challenged me mentally, and encouraged me to look inwardly at myself and my ambitions, but opened my eyes to a whole new world of endless possibilities as well. The philosophy behind outdoor education is one that intrigues me. It is such a well thought through and accurate way of teaching, it makes me wonder why more people don’t adopt it. Throughout this course I have been encouraged to use the teaching, and skills I have learned here, and use them throughout my life, remembering that it is about more than going out and doing all sorts of things to recreate, we learned how to weigh our risk verses competence to find that peak adventure. Use self- efficacy to know when we were nearing misadventure or disaster, having confidence in ourselves, but also knowing how to survey the risks. Intro to outdoor education has encouraged me to remember the important places and things in my life, to never stop pursuing my dreams, and to never let anyone else tell me what I can and can’t do. Outdoor education is one of the most versatile fields I have seen to this day, and offers a wide variety of paths to follow, but the important part about it, is never losing sight of why do are doing what you do, and to keep doing what you

I plan to both continue my education seeking my MSW while and am now hopeful that I will be opening the door on a drop-in center, Tony’s Place, that will be open 7 days a week before the end of this summer break between schools.…

Most of these activities are outdoors and rely on what nature has to offer for fun. Most children who go away to summer camps come from cities and suffer from “nature deficit disorder” to the narrow experience of modern indoor life. Outdoor experiences enrich kid's perceptions of the world and support healthy child development. The outdoors also offer the opportunity for diverse activities, most of which are physical. Although the children may not immediately appreciate being active, their bodies and minds will appreciate the fresh air and exercise.…

Growing up in one of the poorest regions of the United States has taught me two things; one, we are not defined by stereotypes, and two, hardships are made to be overcome. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Middlesboro, KY sits on the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. The multicolored fall foliage and the vivid green mountains in the spring are disserved by the descriptor spectacular. My roots are firmly nestled in the Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone started his journey to the West decades ago. I am proud to call myself an Appalachian-American.…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

Initially, I came into my undergraduate studies at St. Ambrose University looking to become an Occupational Therapist, but that goal changed once I began my undergraduate coursework. Towards the end of a semester of research methods, I became fascinated with statistics and the process of research. In biopsychology classes, I learned how wonderful and sometimes cruel the human mind could be. Occupational Therapy suddenly seemed less interesting and I began to look more seriously at pursuing a different path, more in line with the amazing things I was learning about psychology, research, and the brain.…

Elizabeth Gilbert, famed author of Eat, Pray, Love, once wrote, “You spend a lot of your life having people tell you to follow your passion… passion is hot, it burns. Every day, you can’t access that… instead, follow your curiosity.” After graduating from Terra Nova High School in 2002 I decided to leave my home in the San Francisco Bay Area and move to Las Vegas to pursue better economic opportunities. For the past 13 years I’ve had the opportunity to closely interact with the diverse population constantly coming in and out of the city through my full time job at the Wynn Resort. It was through these frequent daily interactions that I became interested in human behavior and decided to follow my curiosity by enrolling at College of Southern…
