When someone said the phrase “Organizational Development” I need to admit I did not know what they were talking about. Even up to the first class, I was still puzzled about what organizational development was, despite having read the first twelve chapters in Practicing Organization Development: A Guide for Leading Change by Rothwell, Stavros, Sullivan, et.al. I felt like I was learning another foreign language and was not sure of myself. Now, that we endured four face-to-face classes in Education Organization Development, I can now say that I understand the material in the class. Dr. Wiggall explained that Chester Barnard explained that an organization is not a place; an organization is a system of consciously coordinated personal activities or forces of two or more persons (Wiggall, R., 2015). In addition, Dr. Wiggall went on to explain that Mr. Barnard further explained that an organization’s efficiency and effectiveness is linked to the cooperative effort of the citizens (members) of the organization (Wiggall, R., 2015). With this in mind, I wanted to focus my first journal article synopsis on what is an organization, so I can further understand the topic. Being new to the subject matter, learning about what are organization development and change management is was extremely significant. What was also helpful to learn in this chapter was learning what certain terminology meant. I felt like this chapter was almost like a 101 course on organization development, what is it and what it is not and change management. It gave me the foundations of the topic and allowed me to understand the background information before moving on. I cannot say how I will use this information in my career; however I can say that this information will be used to help me further my understanding of the course
