This class revealed to me that I have a hiking style. Something I never consider before. Some characteristics are: I found that I enjoyed hiking with a small group of people. I define a small group being less than four people. Large groups are difficult to organize and everyone has a different perspective or interest. Since I am female, it is important to have others there for safety. I think everyone should be around the same skill level. When part of the group is way ahead and the rest are behind, it makes it hard to communicate with the entire group. The group ahead always has to stop and wait for the others. I assume this impacts their experience negatively. I want to take in the outdoors and keep the conversation low and enjoying

I never did any research about the areas on prior hikes. The information gave me landmarks to anticipate, which helps alleviate any anxiety about being in the correct place. I had my bearings such as, I knew what to expect, how long the hike was going to be, the elevation and so forth. The next hike I had studied the area and had a map, so I knew what to expect. So, this will become a practice for me.
I think for future planned hike, I will get a book or more information to take with me in case there is a change of plans on the hike. It makes you feel more confident when you have a sense of the surrounding area and lay of the land. It also helps with less confusion about where you are. Lots of hiking trails have more than one intersection and I certainly don’t want to get turned around. The possibility of getting lost in the woods does not sound exciting.
I was surprised at how annoying it was to hear constant chatter on the trail. I wanted to sink into the calm and serene outdoors without interference. Although some conversation is pleasant, allowing time to relate to the nature and scenery is a big element of the hike for me. I have found I enjoy the landscape of the hike. Seeing a tree at an odd angle or getting a view of the mountain where you can experience the beauty without distraction is

Procrastination is always in the background, especially with my busy schedule. Getting use to a pack stocked with supplies was a little of a challenge. Especially going over uneven terrain or crossing the water. I did find having a pack was a good resource. I had something to carry things in for the unexpected circumstances. The last hike I did with the class, made me glad I had extra clothes to change into. It was surprising how more comfortable the hike was when you are warm. All and all on my next hike, I will be prepared with the knowledge of the area and

I think this story idea will interest Huck readers. Along the US-Mexico border, migrants and thru-hikers walk side-by-side but worlds apart. The Pacific Crest Trail attracts two types of people long-distance hikers about to start the journey of a lifetime and northbound migrants seeking better lives in the US. In spring, their paths converge near wooden columns marking the start of the 2,060 -mile journey that traverses the spine of the Sierra Mountains to the Canadian border. Both the thru-hikers and the migrants share a common bond and that's to cross the southernmost section of the PCT safely, while carrying the weight of expectations on their shoulders.…

The Wyoming backcountry is stunning. There is an infinite blanket of trees in every direction. The sky has two moods either happy: blue with cotton ball clouds or angry: a stormy scary black color. The air smells like sage and pine -- fresh and crisp. July, 2015, along with 11 close friends, 2 counselors, and a trip leader I went hiking in the backcountry of Wyoming on a 6 day backpacking trip.…

It’s the calm of the morning, and I’m tired. The smooth and curving edges of the trail entertain my eyes as I hike towards my goal, the summit of Mt. Hyndman. It’s a kind trail, made of a cluster of aromas and a collage of colors. Sagebrush and young saplings add to the sensation of the vista. Sharp crackles occur beneath my feet as insects scamper around, frantically searching for minute fissures to conceal themselves in.…

Being in nature, you will feel like a changed person and come out with different emotions. Thoreau said he wanted to live life to the fullest and get the most out of his experience in nature. “I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put rout all that was not life, to cut broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to it’s lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and to publish its meanness to the world” (Thoreau 237). Thoreau was passionate about being in nature and he felt new and different emotions. Thoreau did better at emphasizing the importance of nature compared to Emerson.…

The earth’s continents, mountains, valleys, and islands have been mapped out in great detail for years. The golden age of global exploration is over and has been for quite some time. In some people’s eyes this may equate to exploration being over, a dead art form so to speak. While the entirety of earth’s surface has been explored, to the extent of our current abilities at least, there are still vast areas that we know little about. Exploration of outer space has been a much more recent development than exploration on earth.…

As a group, it was interesting to exchange and debate in order to find our way. For instance, we had some trouble finding the CBC tour and the small lookout. We argued and looked at the map many times, as some thought we had skipped it and others were still looking for it… We tried to determine geographical landmarks in order to match the map with where we were at that moment in time. Besides, this first hike has been very useful for me, since I will certainly return to Mount Royal with friends and I will then feel now more familiar to the geography of the mountain and its surroundings.…
