Personal Reflection On Group Observation

In this class, we got to do a group activity where we were divided into four groups. I am in group three and there are five members in my group. Our team was responsible for producing a paper tower that fit the professor’s requirements. We needed to build the highest and strongest tower. We have 50 sheets of papers, one big tape and 10 paper clips. The extra credit goes to the top three groups from four groups. The first one gets 7%, second group gets 5%, and the third one gets 3% extra credit. My group got 3% extra credit. The group four got 7%, and group two got 5%.
1. Group Climate: The emotional atmosphere of a group.
Before the group activity, I never used to talk to my group members even in class. At the beginning, our group climate was cold, everyone kept silent and there was little or no talking. However, when the professor said, “You now have five minutes to get a plan on how to build the tower.” This is the point that the group climate began to change. People started warming up and the conversation began to flow.

Communication: the deliberate or accidental transfer of meaning.
In the group, we talked to each other and exchanged ideas on how to build the tower. This helped us come up with a plan of action. We decided that two boys should put the triangular towers together using tape and clip. Then, three girls used paper to make the triangular towers whereby would make one triangular tower. If a person had a new idea, we would discuss it together and come up with a conclusion. I felt very happy and relaxed when talking with my group

This week’s group dynamics class had us outside the “fishbowl” observing the other group. We were to make observations while the other group is attempting to build a tower which needed to be freestanding without any sort of support for a given time. I believe the length of time was about a minute, but then that is pretty long, and so, I am unsure as I can’t remember. Another crucial aspect was that the tower was to be built out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows.…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

The teacher began by giving each group to figure out how to solve the problem. Once time was up each group would suggest their ideas and one student was at the board writing the ideas. The teacher only intervened if the idea was unrealistic and he would explain why could not do that. After the students decided on what they wanted, the teacher had final say. This type of project really helps to give the students something that they have done for themselves.…

It is easier to mention the pieces to someone else so you can work together and make a complete thought. Often when I am working by myself I can’t necessarily put it all together in a sentence that makes sense. Something that I liked about working with the group was that we all did our part. In some classes, when there is a group project assigned, there is usually an uneven amount of work that is completed between the students. With this particular assignment though we all did our own part of the work and everything was fair.…

When I was in tenth grade, in my marine sciences class we had a group project, in which we had to build three boats. It was the first project of the year, and it was a big part all of our grades. The boats could only be twelve centimeters by twelve centimeters at the most and could only be comprised of the materials provided in the class, tinfoil, two popsicle sticks, straws, tape, paper, etc. Each boat had to serve a different purpose, sail straight, hold thirty dice, or survive waves, and the group that built the boat that served its purpose the best received extra credit. My group consisted of Shane, Kyle, Isaac, and…

I work in a Transfer Center for a Level II Trauma Center and we recently acquired a new Director of Administration. Throughout the last year, the Director has made a point to change many processes, for worse or for better. The majority of her effort has been focused on how the office functions as a group or “team.” Two influential factors on how our group functions is the fact that the entire team is female in gender and group decision making. There is a particular instance where the team was gathered and was expected to participate in a meeting about streamlining processes in consultative phone calls.…

Week 2 Application Assignment: Group Dynamics and Group Stages In 1965, Bruce Tuckman developed one of the most influential models of “the developmental stages in a small group” (Bonebright, 2010, p. 111). It is a four stage model in which each stage needed to be completed in order to reach optimum group functioning. These stages were dubbed “forming”, “storming”, “norming”, “performing”. Later in 1977, he and Mary Ann Conover Jensen added “adjourning” as a fifth stage in his model (Bonebright, 2010).…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

In terms of group cohesiveness, I felt that we were quite unified. Each member had different roles in the group which made everyone of us indispensable and we cooperate well with one another. We were all assigned with different tasks based on our strengths and collaborated in such a way that we were able to complement each other’s lacking. As a whole, I would consider the dynamics and processes in our group as constructive. Our group dynamic and processes can be further described through the concept of leadership, conformity and planning fallacy.…
