I chose to reflect on my persuasive essay on why girls should make the fist move towards guys. My paper was addressed to college aged, heterosexual females. I definitely believe that I selected the right audience. I felt that addressing my paper to all females would have been extremely broad due to the fact that not all females are interested in men. Likewise, I feel like I definitely geared my paper towards my selected audience. I feel like I gave situations that are realistic and relatable. If I would have chosen any other audience, my paper would not have been as effective. Among these lessons, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I need to write with a purpose. I need to know who I’m writing to and what I am trying to convey. This is especially true in persuasive essays. It’s so easy to write a paper complaining about everything you do and don’t like about a particular situation. Doing that however, never gets you the result you want. You have to know who you’re writing to, know what they like, and what they want. In my essay, it would have been so much easier for me to write a paper telling girls how much easier it would be for me if they made the first move. If my paper would have followed along those lines, my paper would have been significantly less effective. As a writer, I now understand that I’m not writing for myself. Even if I’m writing a story about my life, I’m writing it to entertain my audience. Telling a story with every single detail, will cause the reader to get bored. Telling a story without enough detail causes confusion. This class has taught how to essentially balance these out. I learned how you have to learn how to take certain situations of your story and create a sense of dramatic build-up in order to keep your reader entertained. I also learned that having a twist at the end of your paper is a very effective tool in keeping your reader
