Genogram Case Study

The third and final session began with an open question about how the couple’s thanksgiving dinners went. Understanding that the couple spent the holiday apart since Marcelina’s daughter is not friendly with James the holidays are spent apart so that there is no quarrel during the day. This was discussed during the genogram session in where the family’s issues were brought to light. The genogram is an incredibly useful tool for a counselor in that it allows for the counselor to comprehend the power balance and it allows the counselor to discover relationships between family members that might be hidden by the clients. At this point during the session I felt myself allowing them to talk for longer period of time in order to assess their listening skills and body language. I wanted to ascertain if the earlier session has had the desired effect in that the tug of war and need to be right as lessened from the first session. At first, I was pleased to observe that the couple especially, James has minimized obvious seeking to be right. As I mentioned James would smirk and position his body in a manner that seemed to be ready to pounce on a point that he found himself able to argue for his benefit. During this session he did not repeat this behavior except for one instance in where I mentioned to Marcelina that one of her remarks was expressed in a manner that she would be right with the both outcomes. Marcelina had a good session and was able to communicate further her thoughts and ideas. This made me feel better in that she has progressed positively for the reason that earlier in the session should would pause and ask questions if I comprehended what her meaning was.
