Reflection Paper On Death

I have never thought about a formal definition of death before this assignment. The thought of death elicits, in me, a mental depiction of a cold, lifeless corpse, without a heartbeat. It wasn’t until I really dug into my past that I realized I have been given different definitions of the word death. Being raised in a Christian home I was taught two different definitions of death, physical and spiritual. And upon my arrival in college my view on death began to shift to a more biological definition. Defining death is an important key to understanding how I view personhood.
Every Sunday morning my family and I would dress in the best clothes we had and would attend church. As I sat in the pew I remember the pastor explaining the two types of

The reason I think this is because after all vital activity has ceased the soul leaves the body and a body without a soul is dead. I believe that every human being that has ever existed has a soul and is considered a person. On the flip side is Empirical Functionalism. Most philosophers believe that what constitutes personhood is a set of abilities or functions. Some of these functions or abilities include higher brain functions, ability to relate to others, and self-awareness. Now with this definition people with a mental illness, elderly, infants, and people sleeping no longer qualify as a person. Empirical Functionalism detonates the definition of a person to what abilities they offer to the world. I don’t see how this can be true since I have met children with a mental illness, and I know they are not worthless to the society. They just contribute in a different way. My cousin adopted two kids from Russia and later learned that they were suffering from ADHD. He later explained how this was a blessing in disguise. Not only are there successful doctors, artist, actors, entrepreneurs, etc. with ADHD, but the children also impact their parents. My cousin and his wife learned to push themselves and learn about the mental illness and how to help, brought the couple closer together, gave hope to other parents with the same situation, greater compassion and patience, and how to push your children and

Being biologically a human does not mean that we are a person, because that is not a condition of personhood. Frankfurt rejects both premises of Strawson's Basic ArgumentBeing a human is not even necessary in order to be considered a person. The philosophy behind personhood defines personhood as neither including all human organisms or excluding all humans as being labeled as persons. Harry Frankfurt believes that it is possible conceptually that some of the non-human species should be considered a person as well as certain human beings not be considered human.…

Death, it is complex yet simple at the same time. People view the dead and the dying in different ways. While reading the two books for the class I was given a look into two very different viewpoints on death. Elizabeth Kubler- Ross examines the grieving stages showing the more sentimental side of death in her book “On Death and Dying”. Poets Catherine Davis and Dylan Thomas both have different and unique views on the topic of death. One believes we should rage at the end while the other sees all losses being the same after a time. Personally I see death as returning to a place we cannot remember.…

I will be sociologically analyzing death as a cultural phenomenon, stage of the life course, and personal experience. The first day in SOCY 4131, we talked about death. In a “Life Course” class, one may be surprised death is brought up so early. The ironic thing about the life course is that living with a “good” death in mind usually reflects a good life. I will further explain what this means throughout the essay.…

Every decision that the legislature and the courts make that includes the term “person” has great importance to the status of the precedent. For example, if a court decides that the attack of a pregnant mother that resulted in the miscarriage of her fetus is murder, the court unintentionally created the precedent that a fetus is a “person” and has rights under the law. This then conveys that abortion is illegal because it is the murder of a fetus, which is now a “person” according to the ruling. That decision may only reflect the judge’s, or jury’s, opinion on abortion rather than what the term “person” actually includes; whether they intended to or not. Personhood does not actually exist in the legal framework of the United States.…

Death is a universal word which many people can easily acknowledge, though there are many meanings to it and they can vary with each religion. The most common groups that define it is biblical, philosophical, and medical. In many religions, each have something to say about death and how for some it isn’t the end.
