Reflection Paper On Dance Experience

Through out this quarter, I have learned many things from this Advanced Modern Dance class. We have accomplished the final performance at the Riverside Art Museum last night. Performing with this class was a wonderful experience. Most of us did not know what to expect and how this performance will be since many of us are not dance major, and it could be the first time to perform in front of audiences for some of us. As for me, this is not my first time to perform in front of people. However, I still got a little bit nervous. I have never performed this kind of dance before. The dance I have performed before are well organized, and well structured with specific movement. However, this work we performed are spontaneous. It is not planned or arranged like the other kinds of dance I have learned. We learned all the materials through this quarter. For this performance, Crystal just told us the order of the performance, and the rest we need to figure them out by ourselves.
Before the performance, we had 2 hours to practice. I was very worried because I 'm too concerned about the time. Crystal told us that the performance will last for 45 minutes, but I feel like from what we were doing will not last for that long. During this 2 hours, we made some changes and adding to the dance.

I noticed that William 's legs are always aim higher than the others, which also helps him to use the energy as the momentum to accomplish his moves and also make the audiences feel pleasant to watch him to use all of his energy to do the work. From my observation, I also saw the way they use all the space to do the movement, and they were able to manage the space to do the movement without hitting the others. From observing their performance, I was able to learn how to manage the space between each other and how to use the momentum into the

The large speakers that surround the filled room begin to vibrate as the loud unknown voice begins to announce my name. I now know that it is my time to shine. While standing behind the long, red curtains I begin to do what comes natural; lifting my head as if I am looking above and beyond the ceiling that lies above me with a smile projecting from my face, standing tall with strong energy from my toes to the tips of my fingers and pushing my shoulders back to respectfully greet my judges. The adrenaline pounds in my chest, but confidence over powers and I am nothing but ready to entertain my audience. The loud roars of encouraging chanting and cheering rings in my ears as I walk towards the spotlight that gives off a warm radiant heat where I hit my beginning position.…

“Classical Fantasy” choreographed by Jerry Opdenaker, restaged and danced by Ciera Fielding, was a beautifully done piece because of it’s nod to classical ballet. The reference to classical ballet was due to both the musical choice of a composed piece lacking lyrics, and purely instrumental, as well as her outfit that consisted of a tutu, her ballet shoes with the boxed toe to allow her to go fully on point, and lastly due to her perfection of the aplomb. In this piece Ms. Fielding used indirect space by taking command of the entire floor as she pirouetted from each space to transition into the next move. While her body was very upright, and she often spun on toe, her sense of weight was light weight. It was almost like she was floating gracefully across the stage, which created a fluid effect to her sudden sense of time.…

I was in the 10th grade and I have dreamed of always performing in the school talent show and winning the title of ‘’ Most Talented’’ and of course the cash prize. I knew this day would come where I would have to show my true talent of singing and confront my stage freight. Everyone in the school knew I can sing and they also knew I was shy but I followed my gut and signed up for the show anyway.…

Dancing has been apart of my life since I was nearly three years old. When I was younger I would do dance at the community center, but as I grew older I moved to a studio. I have been at two dance studios my entire life, one better for me than the other. My first studio started off great, I made the company, I had very many friends, and I loved dancing and being there. Unfortunately, this only lasted a year or two.…

Fear and immaturity were once snags that prevented me from committing to a professional path in the allied health. It plagued and produced gaffes during my undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University which then led me to put the desire on hold. In hindsight, it was the best decision because discovering and developing myself as a person was necessary before achieving any kind of future success. After college, I entered a Master’s program in Statistics/Actuarial Science at Columbia University. It was there that I fortified my strengths in quantitative reasoning and where I credit my aptitude for problem solving.…

Each movement has a new objective and every breath a fluid as a rippling river. No style is exactly the same, yet with their amazing differences I remain the same dancer. Exploring various sides of myself has never intimidated me, but intrigued me. This art has given me increasing confidence as I mature, and has helped me come out of my shell. For the past 14 years I have aimed for perfection; which at times meant choosing rehearsal over spending time with friends, or sleeping in on the weekends.…

Having never before observed a technique class, I did not really know what to expect besides seeing an instructor teach the students different moves and techniques. While I sat in the corner watching the students warm up by doing different tap techniques, I was amazed when I saw one of my friends had walked in and started warming up with the rest of the students. After I saw him dancing, I was astonished by how literally anyone can do these dances that look so difficult with a little bit of practice. It was very fun and entertaining to watch other students learn and practice their new dance moves. When we were first told that we were going to have to observe a rehearsal along side with the dance technique class I got really excited.…

I attended the St. Ambrose University Dance Company Performance in the Rogalski Center Ballroom on Sunday, April 15th at 2pm. The dance company is a club here at St. Ambrose for students who may not have the time to fully commit to the dance team here at St. Ambrose. However, these individuals all share the love for dancing. Through this club they are able to continue to do so and practice dance without such a big time commitment. Although the time commitment is not as much, these six individuals; Rhett Koterba, Delaney Powers, Meagin Sichterman, Kaylin Sarver, Twyla Pereira and Libby Miller work incredible hard all year long to choreograph these beautiful pieces to perform for events like their showcase in the Rogalski Ballroom.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…

One of the most incredible video that I watched to complete a Dance Observation assignment for Dance class is the video of: “Wade in the Water from “Revelations” by Alvin Ailey Company. This video was published on YouTube on November 25, 2007 and performed at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This video is very beautiful and impressive at the first time I saw it. Then I keep watching it again to really focus on the detail of very movement and sections. The dancers presented a movement of an African American slavery era being empowered by drowned in the water but keep standing strong tightly.…

Dancing in the Spotlight Standing in the spotlight is a very frightening, gut-wrenching accomplishment. Dancing alone in the spotlight can be even more so. I experienced dancing in the spotlight two years ago, when I played the part of Clara in the Nutcracker. Of course, it all started with dance, or rather, without dance. My mom was driving me to the studio, but I was not feeling well, so she strode inside to inform my teacher I was unable to dance that day.…
