Reflection Paper On Close Reading

2. Broad, Lifelong Goal/s & Rationale: Students must learn how to practice close reading when reading for information in a text. I will teach my students to determine how the text is structured, and understand the impact of certain words or phrases that the author chooses. My future students will one day be adults who make decisions daily about which products to buy and which ones to not buy. Students need to understand that some of the products they purchase will never go away, or at least take thousands of years do decay.

3. Specific Daily Objective:
• Students will learn and understand how to close read informational texts.
• Students will learn to determine central ideas in a text as well as the point of view in which the author takes.

• Students will be able to use the rest of the class period to read the articles they would have brought in for homework the night before.

Introduce Reflective Essay:
• “Please read the handout I have just given all of you. After completing your social justice statement, you will be required to write a reflective essay that should do the following: discuss the group or groups of people with the social justice issue, your process in creating your statement, and it needs to include at least two sources this means that your essay will have at least two quotes that support your social justice statement. I will take all of your questions now about this assignment.”

10. Adaptations:
• During the guided practice portion of this lesson I will concentrate my time with the ELL’s and IEP’s to make sure they are able to comprehend the text.
• In order to get more students engaged and to further help them I will have students who feel confident they understand what close reading is come up to the document camera to give a shot at marking up the text.
