I have had many moments recalling fond memories of the first time I stayed away from home by myself. It was at ALERT Academy in Sandy Springs Texas, and the program was called Skills Training for Emergency Preparedness, or STEP. The program was designed for Christian young ladies and was set up similarly to what I imagine boot camp would be like, though not as strict. While I was there, I learned canoeing, search and rescue, CPR, first aid, AED training, survival training, basic home maintenance, repelling, river crossing, and I even trained for a 3k run. While I had a great time there, I still found some aspects of the trip rather trying of my patience.
When I first arrived, I was assigned a group color and a team, then introduced to my group

I didn’t struggle in the class, but then I didn’t struggle in much of anything academically. After I understood the concept, I spent most of the class doodling while my classmates were confused by the basics of Y axis versus X axis. After several hours of class time, everyone finally understood how to use a compass and map.
Plumbing was probably the most useless class I had ever taken in my life. The first thing they taught was how to use a plunger. Yes, you read that correctly. What was more appalling, is how many of the girls did not know how to use a plunger! We spent the entire first day plunging toilets. The next day was better. We learned how to get underneath a sink and remove a blockage, and how to replace a faucet. I already knew how to do everything that was taught in the class, but that is only because I helped add an extra bathroom onto my parent’s house.
After the first class was over we would take a long walk to the main cafeteria for lunch where we would get in line for the buffet. Every day a different group would be responsible for cleaning up the cafeteria. One team would do the kitchen area. Working with the giant dishwasher was best part. The other team would wipe down tables and sweep the dining area. Oftentimes, if we finished early, someone would play the piano and we would spend some time doing stupid girl

Colleagues, Gene Autry (and Aerosmith, for what it’s worth) famously sang, “I’m back in the saddle again.” Today, the Arizona Legislature got back in its saddle as the 53rd Legislature, First Regular Session gaveled in for the first time today at noon. The day’s activities had that “first day of school” feeling and was largely pomp and circumstance. Members were officially sworn-in, speeches were made, and family and friends were introduced.…

I never thought that I would be sitting on top of a washing machine waiting for my clothes to dry while at the same time, writing a shitty first draft essay. It’s amazing where education can take you. In my first semester of composition, I read “Brainology” by Carol S. Dweck and “The Student Fear Factor” by Rebecca Cox. In Brainology, Dweck explains that there are two different mindsets: a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. A growth mindset is when a person has a mindset that intelligence can learn their mistakes.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Being a full-time college student, I have no combat training or experience camping in the outdoors with necessities. I love my electronics and being indoors. Since the life of a soldier is very different from that of my own, I found it intriguing to listen to my roommates, a majority who are ROTC, tell me about their physical training and international trips outside of the United States jurisdiction; my roommate was training this past summer in the Republic of Georgia. Just to get an idea of where that is, it is at the intersection of Europe and Asia. My roommate told me about his involvement in a kind of boot camp experience.…

I am interested in volunteering at California Hospital Medical Center because it offers me experience I can not get anywhere else. As a minor in college pursuing a career in medicine, it is difficult to find a hospital that will allow me to watch the different specialities in medicine. At California Hospital Medical Center, I can watch doctors do what they are best at, and see the difference they make first hand. Additionally, California Hospital Medical Center offers a variety of services, and it is close to my college. Getting to California Hospital Medical Center will not take long, and I can get there by public transportation.…

On the internet, there is a "meme" called the Asian grading system. Though amusing, it reveals some of the pressures that Asian Americans often face growing up with overbearing parents. Students without parents to push them struggle to catch up in the competitiveness environment that exists in high schools across America. I'm a victim of the race to perfection, academic excellence and the pressures of failure and shortcomings. I'm not the only one and I won't be the last.…

My family and I had to make the hardest decision if I were to stay home schooled, or go to public school. I really wanted to go to public school, but a small part of me wanted to stay home schooled because I thought I wasn't ready to bring on that big of a challenge. Big school with lots of kids, teachers, rooms, and lockers are all different and new for me. Lockers is the biggest one for me because I have never ever in my life had a locker before. Friends is another one because I know a lot of people that go to Foothills, but I knew there will be pumps along the way.…

Hungry for adventure and in need to do something great in life I decided to join the Army National Guard. I was 17 years old with a mixture of nervous excitement in my gut, scared of the unknown.
