Classroom Observation Report: Mr. Bahweting Charter Schools

I had the opportunity to observe Mr. Billy Mitchell on Monday, February 8th, 2016 and for a short while again on Tuesday, February 9th. Mr. Mitchell is a teacher at the Joseph K. Lumsden (JKL) Bahweting Charter School located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Mr. Mitchell’s first grade classroom that I will be attending consists of 22 children from a rural community. The purpose of this observation was to observe children as they completed tasks related to science. I did not interact much during this observation, I opted for remaining in the corner and simply observing. I chose this particular day to observe because of the activity Mr. Mitchell 's students were engaged in for my time in the classroom. They were excited to witness that the colored water had change the celery 's appearance. I also found it interesting the children 's perspective of what an underground root system looked like. There were many different variations and the children were creative in their expectations of what a root system looked like. I can directly relate what I learned to the 5E 's. The children engaged in the activity as they dropped dye into the water. They explored the celery and made observations of what it looked like prior to placing it in the dye and the day after. The children elaborated on what it looked and explained why and how it looked like that after a night in the water. Finally, I did not observe the children evaluating their understanding. The celery also supported the diverse learners in the classroom. JKL is predominantly made up of children with Native American backgrounds and cultures. This activity addressed Native Americans and how they were able to successfully grow
