I realize I don’t have to agree, but it’s imperative that I understand in order to help them. I think the correct term for this is cultural humility. It’s certainly humbling to realize that you have pre-conceived notions that blur your perspective. I never would have considered attending an African American Festival. I have gotten the impression that the African American community wants to be separate by the specific holidays, events, television channels and more they have established. Taking into consideration this was a new experience for me, and definitely, outside my comfort zone, the outcome justified the means. Initially, I felt outnumbered, but not in a threatening way. I was acutely aware I was the minority, but as I mingled with the crowd, my anxiety gradually diminished. My comfort level went from anxious and uncomfortable to being able to relax and blend in. How does a very white girl blend in at an African American Festival? I thought this was rather humorous myself until I realized that I simply did what came naturally to me.
