I found it frustrating while reading these books and our discussions in class that the world is so focused on what we refer to as ‘intercourse’. The more I learn and read the better understanding I get that the world and society we leave in today is so under educated. In the physical quadrant of the ISIS wheel so much more than penetration is going on. It involves your whole body from head to toe. This is something I believe we often overlook. I loved the idea mentioned in Expanding the Practice of Sex Therapy, personalize your own Extragential Matrix, to discover what you personally like and dislike. This is a good way to discover oneself. Too often we only focus on this section of the wheel. If sex is not the way we want it, it is quickly blamed on physical difficulties. Examining the other sections of the ISIS wheel can solve many times the physical problems.
Emotional
I have a personal belief that all sex, whether it is with your partner of many years or a one-night stand, comes with some type of emotional connection to it, good or bad. Celibacy still affects an individual’s ISIS Wheel; all four quadrants are still active. Erotic dreams and fantasies fall into the mental quadrant, which in returns affects the physical quadrant. Fantasies allow us to go to places we never thought possible. They can give us a sense of hope and relief. Masturbation is a touchy subject for a lot of clients and it is important to ask how they feel about it. It can be used to empower oneself and fill a void one may be having. For another, masturbation could fulfill their physical needs but destroy their mental and spiritual component. Other sexual behaviors that I have not mentioned can have the same
