Throughout the day on Friday, October 2, 2015 I keep track of the activities, emotions, and thoughts that I had throughout the day. As I recorded these actions, I was able to notice that we as humans are more active then we think we are. Our actions, emotions, and activities are all controlled by various parts of the brain working together at once. Friday morning I had to wake up early and go to my Honors English 101 class and turn in an essay. The part of the brain that controlled my ability to wake up was the brainstem, in particular the Reticular Formation. The brainstem also controls heartbeat, breathing, and eating. While I was sitting in English Class, I noticed that I was very hungry and that it was time for me …show more content…
The Hypothalamus is not only response for sleeping; but also for controlling emotions, sleep, and body temperature. Before I could go eat, I had to take my entrance exam to be a student in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. Moments before I took the exam, I started to feel a little anxious. Anxiety is controlled by the Amygdala, the amygdala is responsible for major emotions, in particular fear. After eating, I went back to my room to finish my University 101 homework, the part of the brain that gave me ability to remember the information needed to do my homework was the Cerebrum. The Cerebrum is responsible for reading, learning, and thinking. While doing my homework, I was required to read the material given and think about what steps needed to be taken to complete the task. Later in the day, I began to notice that I was getting hungry again, and I went to chick-fil-a in the student center to grab a bit to eat with my friends. The Hypothalamus was controlling when the signal was sent for my body to get a message that I was hungry, because a part of it of it controls appetite. During the day I got disappointed by something that I witnessed, the Amygdala controls deep emotions.

On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

This semester has flown by; however, English 101 has shaped my writing in so many ways. Initially, I did not recognize the ways which rhetoric, technology, research, and collaboration have affected my writing. As I review my work from this semester, it is quite noticeable that my writing has improved a lot since English IV honors. Rhetoric Of all the things I have learned in English 101, rhetoric has continued to be something I use.…

Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Not only will these benefit my overall writing and making it flow better, it will all in all make more sense to the readers. Even though I learned many skills and objectives during this semester, four skills really stood out to me. Cohesion, comma usage, the use of satire, and how to write a definitional essay.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

I have absolutely loved English 101 this semester—and I am not just saying that to make you feel good. In one semester alone I can confidently say I have learned more than I have in any other English class. But what made this class so special to me was that I learned more than just grammar and rhetoric—I learned new ways of thinking. Throughout my education career I have rarely been asked to consider two sides of a situation. The idea of having an opinion and portraying it clearly to others was drilled into me in high school; but my opinion is only half of what matters.…

The hypothalamus is located in the midbrain below the thalamus. It controls bodily maintenance activities such as eating and drinking. I believe that their hypothalamus is affected because they have an insatiable hunger for human flesh and not normal food and water. The thalamus is the “brain’s sensory switchboard, located on the top of the brainstem…” (pg.64) It helps control alertness and regulates sleep cycles.…
