Reflection Paper About Thanksgiving

There are many varied interpretations, perceptions, and feelings regarding one of the most recognized holidays in the United States. Today, it appears many people face the professional and moral dilemma of just how to be honest and informative about the true nature of Thanksgiving without passing on historical distortions, and racial and cultural stereotypes. The problem is that part of what many feel they have learned in childhood about the Pilgrims and indigenous Indians and the 'First Thanksgiving ' is a mixture of both history and myth. There are those that take the meaning of Thanksgiving purely on face value while others decry the holiday as one that bespoke the imminent demise of Native Americans. I would like to think however, that the theme of Thanksgiving has truth and integrity far above and beyond what we and our fore bearers have made of it. Thanksgiving is a bigger concept than just the story of the founding of Plymouth Plantation and the country. When reflecting upon Thanksgiving, most often we conjure up thoughts of changing seasons and transition to fairer climates – depending on where one lives. It also marks the second to last holiday to the end of the year revolving around consumerism. We also reflect on the memories and upcoming events such as visiting with family and friends, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, watching football, and the ever present cornucopia of food and drink.
