Reflection Paper About Thanksgiving

There are many varied interpretations, perceptions, and feelings regarding one of the most recognized holidays in the United States. Today, it appears many people face the professional and moral dilemma of just how to be honest and informative about the true nature of Thanksgiving without passing on historical distortions, and racial and cultural stereotypes. The problem is that part of what many feel they have learned in childhood about the Pilgrims and indigenous Indians and the 'First Thanksgiving ' is a mixture of both history and myth. There are those that take the meaning of Thanksgiving purely on face value while others decry the holiday as one that bespoke the imminent demise of Native Americans. I would like to think however, that the theme of Thanksgiving has truth and integrity far above and beyond what we and our fore bearers have made of it. Thanksgiving is a bigger concept than just the story of the founding of Plymouth Plantation and the country. When reflecting upon Thanksgiving, most often we conjure up thoughts of changing seasons and transition to fairer climates – depending on where one lives. It also marks the second to last holiday to the end of the year revolving around consumerism. We also reflect on the memories and upcoming events such as visiting with family and friends, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, watching football, and the ever present cornucopia of food and drink. The gastro experience often has one loosening belt, reaching for the Tums, and/or contemplating the next round! …show more content…
Quite frankly it is a special time to give thanks. As an organization and personally we have all faced challenges over the course of the year and experienced pride and pleasure in accomplishments. On Thanksgiving Day I am reminded of the bounty that is a part of fabric of our

Michael Dorris passionately expressed his thoughts on the misrepresentation of Native Americans through his article, ‘Why I’m Not Thankful for Thanksgiving’. Not only are the terms and assumptions about Native Americans offensive, but most of them are entirely wrong. Dorris gave a broad idea as to why he isn’t thankful for Thanksgiving, saying it is one of the holiday’s that the most Indian stereotypes develop from. He goes on to say, “Considering virtually none of the standard fare surrounding either Halloween or Thanksgiving contains an ounce of authenticity, historical accuracy, or cross cultural perception, why is it so apparently ingrained?” (Dorris).…

Nationwide Misrepresentation of Native Americans: Politically and Historically Explained As a nationwide problem in the United States, Native Americans are widely misrepresented and misidentified as a group and race of people. Both in the past and in the present, Native Americans have been looked upon as people as well as an ethnical group. Native Americans often have a lower social status in the United States, they are often looked at as people who are exceedingly poor, have many health problems, and are people struggling to make a living for themselves and their families. However, this is not the case.…

What was once a peasant's meal now blesses the kitchens of many five star restaurants, but most importantly my own kitchen. Potatoes were originally eaten for a daily dosage of vitamin A and calcium, causing them to be considered a necessity instead of a luxury. Potatoes were easy to grow and took a lot less preparation than most of their original meals. Irish peasant life typically centered around potatoes because they had them three times a day. Even though potatoes are not as prevalent as they once were to my Irish heritage, potatoes represent much more than a side on a plate.…

Have you ever noticed how in the stores you will see a plethora of Halloween costumes, decorations and the like but immediately following Halloween, you see Christmas themed decorations all over and very little to commemorate Thanksgiving? The most I've seen have had leaves and maybe a cornucopia and really only enough scattered throughout the store to fill a half to one whole aisle. It seems that our national holiday is only truly named and observed within "leaked" black friday ads, alerting you to when the advertised deals start. This never really bothered me in the past. As a little girl Thanksgiving was all about the Macy's Parade, the dog show, food, and the countdown until santa claus and presents galore.…

My family is loud, crazy and not afraid to voice their opinions so there is always drama at every dinner or family event. I chose to write on this because I never payed attention to detail or interactions at these dinners like why the women cook? Or why it is important that we are all together.…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…
