Understanding Other Religions

Improved Essays
During this course I hoped to learn more about my own religion as well as others. I wanted to better understand the theology and history behind the beliefs of those in other cultures. I hoped to gain a new understanding about Islam and how it is related to Christianity. I needed to learn why people believe that they are such different religions. Religion is a subject that is difficult for people to talk about because they fear ridicule or judgment, which is why bracketing is such a good skill to have when talking to people from other cultures. Taking this course has helped me to learn how to see many things, as well as religion, from many different perspectives. Bracketing is now a skill I can use in many situations in life. Since I do plan on being in the medical field, I will be interacting with many people from many different cultures. Knowing what I know now about the many different religions, I can now better understand how to interact with people from …show more content…
What I’ve learned this semester is absolutely heartbreaking. Understanding these other religions made me realize that the only religion that does not make sense is my own. Christian leaders manipulate the word of God so that it seems as though it applies to today’s issues. I felt so ignorant while reading the notes and listening to the lecture on Christianity. I could not believe there was so much I was never told about my own religion. Since taking this course I feel better about myself for having different beliefs than most Christians. I feel as though I have a better understanding of my religion. Although I will always have questions, I know they may never be answered but sometimes questions are more beautiful than answers. In this class I gained more knowledge about the bible than I ever did in years of church and Sunday school. I know now why other cultures do not understand

An important idea from Pim Valkenbergs’ introduction in World Religions in Dialogue is giving an insider’s and outsider’s perspective on the major religions of the world. Incorporating both perspectives will help students gain a deeper knowledge about the main religions of the world. Developing this deeper knowledge will help readers view the religions with an open mind. When it comes to understanding this book, viewing both the outsider and insider viewpoints are very important and beneficial. In the book, students will start each chapter by reading about the outsider’s perspective, which is usually a Christian scholar.…

This course was extremely intriguing and had me hooked from the first discussion forum. It required me to venture out of my comfort zone and ask questions that others viewed as odd, but I knew was going to assist me in my studies. I can recall one specific instance where I was on twenty-four-hour duty and I began asking a police officer doing his security checks questions. It had to be two in the morning and you can tell by the exhausted look on his face when he walked through the bitter cold into our dimly lit building entrance. He spoke with very little energy as he said good morning, but once I began asking him the list of questions that I just so happened to have typed on my laptop screen he immediately perked up and began to speak with life.…

This class has helped open my eyes to one small section of ministry and realize how much work it takes to do ministry even if it is youth ministry which seems like the easiest of ministries. The other Church and Ministry class that has influenced me while being at Trinity is CHML 101. This class has encouraged us to think deeply and about ideas that we have never really thought about before. We have been reading books that help us get a better perspective on what ministry could look like and one of those books that has been a good insight is The Pastor by Eugene Peterson. I have considered being a pastor later on in my life and reading this book has been an interesting and great insight.…

Most people are their religion as a safe haven, a place to turn to when the woes of the world seem very dire and extreme. But, what happens when the places where religions are practice—generally called churches—are plagued with the same issues that are prevalent in every other aspect of society? The issues of racism and managed diversity are no strangers to religious interactions. In the article “Managed Diversity; Race, Place, and an Urban Church”, these concepts are examined in relation to religious interactions. The author, Jessica M. Baron, a theologist and sociologist delved into inner-city churches over the span of 18 months to study the manifestation of racism and managed diversity in church communities.…
