Reflection Paper 2
Three Personal Goals
This course helped in the understanding of research and how important it is to thoroughly examine the research article prior to utilizing it. The first goal was to be able to apply application to nursing practice. Application is defined as, “use a concept in a new situation or unprompted use of an abstraction. Applies what was learned in the classroom into novel situations in the workplace” (Randall, 2010). This goal was partially met. Research articles that were picked for thorough critiques were topics that I felt strongly about regarding my nursing practice. Although, there were strong feelings regarding this and articles were thoroughly studied, the use of these in nursing practice did not happen.

Prior to this course, review of literature was not something that was read in-depth. Now, the review of literature is part of a research article that has become more important due to the foundation it builds for the study, as well as combining this with past research that has been done on the topic of study. “A thorough literature review provides a foundation on which to base new evidence” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p. 54). “For clinical problems, it may also be necessary to learn the ‘status quo’ of current procedures and to review existing practice guidelines” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p. 54). In addition, nurses will use Carper's ways of knowing as describe above and will bring their practical knowledge brought in from clinical experience. This clinical experience is a valuable asset as they understand the environment and can incorporate it into their own experience of practise. Lastly, praxis is the "practice, as distinguished from theory; application or use, as of knowledge or skills" (Myers, 2009, p. 1497) During this project, I have been able to use my knowledge acquired throughout the nursing program and apply it…

The topic of focus for this second unit was Documenting Research, which we discussed in class as encompassing the careful study to define and report new knowledge about a subject. In my annotated bibliography, I examined academic articles that related to my topic of professionalism in nursing, and whether nursing is a profession or simply a job. In my annotated bibliography, I observed various factors, such as the authors’ methods and claims, or I reviewed how helpful their article was to my topic. After our group discussions in class about academic discourses, scientific communities, and the specialized writing that is contained within their community’s articles, it was much easier for me to identify the characteristics like methods, claims…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Physicians should give credit to nurses for their immense valuable contributions on theory, without all their work, physician’s would not have a solid foundation for scientific research. In the same note, with out science-based evidence, nurses would not have knowledge of what is known to be effective with patient care. Both theory and practice should mutually collaborate to extend the knowledge of theory and science for continuing students and or professionals. In my opinion these are all reliable factors to help bridge the gap between theory and…
