Decent Essays
In the fall of 2015, I decided to take Writing II and Comp I. At the time, I did not know how to write a good essay nor was I confident about it. But, everything changed after taking these classes with Dr. Dewayne Dickens. In the beginning, I was a quite frustrated due to the fact that all of my assignments weren’t flowing well and did not make any sense. After a couple assignments and seeking help from Dr. Dickens, I was finally on the right path on how to put together a portfolio. In this portfolio, you will get to read all of the mistakes and corrections that I have made. The first assignment that you will read is, My Service Topic Learners choice. In this assignment, I decided to write down my experience that took place in my neighborhood.

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

PADM 302 Course Reflection My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.…

Writing has always been one of my weakest skills. I never understood the basics of grammar, such as punctuation, verbs, or compound sentences. However, I learned to improve by challenging myself with the essays I am including in my writing portfolio. They have taught me to use my time more wisely in order to develop effective papers. Furthermore, they helped me better myself every day by working hard and seeing a different side of writing papers.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Within my final portfolio are four essays that I have completed throughout composition 1 during the fall semester of 2015 at Collin College. These four essays include a literacy narrative, an article analysis essay, followed by an essay reporting information, and a position arguing essay. All four of these essays were written with one collective purpose. That purpose was to express my personal views on topics while constantly keeping the readers in consideration. While writing my literacy narrative, “Words for Hearing” my purpose was to formulate an essay and present the readers with a narrative that effectively presented my own experiences with both reading and writing.…

I have learned that if I do not over-think the content of my papers while I am writing them it becomes much easier for me to complete them and have the well written. This portfolio not only shows how I have progressed as a writer, but it also shows what I have learned about myself as a writer. It contains not only my poor quality work and my mistakes, but it also shows what I am able to do once I see the mistakes that I commonly make while writing. My revision should show how I would fix the deficiencies that my earlier papers had. However, there are also things that I realized works well for me in my writing, some of which I highlighted in this reflection and some of which shows in my revisions.…

However, I made less improvement in my English academic writing. After receiving so many negative feedbacks on my reports and papers from my instructors advising me to strengthen my writing skills, I, as an international student, decided to take a writing class which is designed for native speakers of English. This writing course completely changes my attitude toward English academic writing. I believe that my portfolio meets the requirements of clear competence because I made a tremendous improvement in composing introduction/conclusion, constructing thesis statement, and developing an argument.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
