Reflection On Writer's Pro Workshops

I just finished Victoria Christopher Murray and ReShonda Tate Billingsley's 3 module "Writer's Pro Workshops" online. I decided to purchase this course to rejuvenate and educate myself as I seriously embark on my journey towards developing my Amazon Author Page.

For me, writing is like running. The more you run, the better you get at it. With steady practice, you get faster and you start to perfect your form. Then you skip a day, two, or seven, and it is like starting from scratch. Writing can be just as painful as first workout soreness. I figured I would ease my way into writing this time. Write a few Amazon shorts, build up my weekly audience and then a full length novel.

When I started the video, I was feeling pretty vulnerable. I was in one those 8 or 9 day writing valleys. I was feeling insecure about my grammar, my creativity and myself. When I opened up an old project, the edits intimidated me and so I shut myself down.

If you are friends with them on Facebook, or have ever gone to one of their book signings or events, then you know they bring a certain serious dose of happiness and positivity to everything they do. This workshop was no different. Victoria Christopher Murray's smile reignited my smile, and before the end of module 1 I felt so much better.

This post is not sponsored by Victoria or ReShonda; the ideas expressed in this review are mine and mine alone. I caught the workshop on sale for 50.00 (the regular price is $60.00). You can purchase each individual module separately for 25.00 apiece.

An idea that I found important in Stephen King's memoir "On Writing" is his statement "stopping a piece of work just because it's hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position." Personally, I found this statement inspiring. Often, I find myself creating excuses which keep me from writing. This is often because I believe a certain topic is hard to write about, or I am not particularly interested in my subject.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Project #1: Literacy Narrative I remember walking across the lawn from our tiny add on classroom, up the stairs, and into the second grade class. Walking to my assigned desk directly in front of the window, I sat down in front of my best friend. Sometimes, sleepy and tired, I stared at the giant oak tree in our school yard and watching the clouds move. My first experience with writing was in fourth grade.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

I was homeschooled my whole childhood, and learned I learned to avoid writing because it would frustrate my mother whenever I made mistakes. She would make feel very unintelligent and inadequate because I was behind the curve in writing. Instead of using my circumstances to motivate me, I stopped doing schoolwork at 14 years old, became a carpenter, and made a lot more money than all of my friends.…

Writer’s Workshop is a type of writing technique that can progressively help to build students’ overall fluency in writing through repeated, continuous exposure to the many different processes of writing. There is no limitation for teachers when looking to introduce this concept to the students within the classroom; however, this type of process mainly begins in kindergarten. Teachers can also implement these types of strategies contained within writer’s workshop in whole or in part classroom settings, depending on individual and class circumstances. The arching goal is to assist in creating students that are fluent in the writing skills and confident.…

With all of this emphasis placed on reading, I wasn’t really exposed to writing until the end of my primary school education which hindered my writing incredibly. I remember being in fourth grade and having all of these creative writing assignments that I was making less than average grades on, and being frustrated because this was the first time that I wasn’t exceling at something. At that time my imagination was expressed through reading fantasy stories instead of writing them. I was fascinated with the stories that I read and that my class mates wrote, but I could never produce material that was equivalent without copying parts or thoughts of other people’s stories, and I wanted to be completely original. After fourth grade, the writing kind of died down until I got to junior high, where it became one of the most important things taught in my English classes.…
