Reflection On Working With The Students Of Color

Decent Essays
Students of color make up more than 88% of the student population at the school in which I currently work. Within the student population, 22% are English Language Learners, 16% have an IEP, and 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Since I work at an alternative program, 100% of the students have continual learning plans. Because this group of students is very diverse, I have found that I have had to make some adjustments.

I become familiar with the students and staff of the school where I work. I research the background of the students and staff. I consult with the school or district experts to learn background information that I need to work efficiently with the students and families. Within the school building, I make sure that I am

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…

Disproportionate Minority Representation Special Education can be provided to any student with disabilities if they qualify for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), but is there a disproportionate representation of minorities in special education classrooms? As it appears now, there is two sides to this argument, the first being an overrepresentation of minority students in special education classes and the second being an underrepresentation of minority students in special education classes. However, when looking at the research and data on the subject there appears to be more minorities, such as Hispanics and African American students in special education classes. To begin, by looking at the data and statistics for North Carolina’s school systems there is an obvious skew in the ratio of minorities to Caucasian students in special education classrooms. In an article by Kris Zorigian and Jennifer Job, they state “35 percent of students receiving special education services are African American, 8 percent are Hispanic, and 53 percent are white” (2010).…

I must admit I was intimidated by the readings for this week. However, once I started, I realized the readings complement the information in Literate Lives from my Literacy Foundations course, which makes it simpler to understand. Let’s look at some of the paraphrased facts from that course that correlates with this week (Flint, 2008) . Then, I will build upon that information to dive deeper into the issue of disproportionality.  The background, culture, and experiences teachers have differ from their students.…

Methods In this chapter, I explain why I decided to do a qualitative method as a part of my capstone. As a part of the qualitative approach, a questionnaire survey was developed for participants to provide input on their experiences. Even though quantitative data could have been collected, they do not allow students to express themselves as effectively as a survey would do. Survey questions were sent to outside observers to ensure that the questions being posed to the participants would be meaningful and allow the researcher to collect data.…

I chose this piece of work to demonstrate my effectiveness as a beginning teacher because it shows how I can make connections between the curriculum and real word experiences. During TAL 856, Curriculum Theory, I had to create a Universal Design for Learning Plan, also known as an UDL Plan. As a beginning teacher, I honestly had no idea how to foster quality inclusive planning or differentiate across content. This UDL plan was my first attempt to create a culturally relevant and responsive lesson. In this plan, the unit was an exploration of how factoring expressions can relate to finding commonalities people share in our classroom.…

For many years’ discrimination has prohibited many minorities from being accepted into a school to further their education. Minorities impact on other students can be great, as well as in the community. Minorities should be eligible to receive help for those who are disadvantaged. Sonia Sotomayor has stated, “One thing has not changed: to doubt the worth of minority students’ achievement when they succeed is really only to present another face of the prejudice that would deny them a chance to even try.” These issues really need to be understood, many people don’t know how hard it is to grow up disadvantaged, and to think they have no future ahead.…
