Holliday Tyson Reflection

The class I watched broke down child birth into three different periods of birth, prenatal, labor and birth, and postnatal. During the prenatal video, Holliday Tyson opens up about how the fathers of the babies are basically put on the back burner. The mothers need to include them in their pregnancy. Furthermore, Ms. Tyson went onto to explaining the anatomy of the pelvis. The way the anatomy was explained was designed for a non-medical person. Ms. Tyson did take in consideration for diversity by explaining that the Asian culture’s pelvis is bigger. She also said that in many different cultures they tend to have an abundance of sex, and that both sex and semen help the cervix become soft. Ms. Tyson emphasizes the importance for mom and dad to work as a team once the baby is born. After the delivery, there should be a period of fifteen to twenty minutes of quiet time for mom, dad, and baby. Mom and dad should keep the baby snug, talk to the baby, and start the bonding process. The bonding process also includes breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is about ninety-nine percent about the latch, Ms. Tyson states. While the mother is breastfeeding, the baby’s stomach should be on the mother’s stomach. The first substance produced by the breast is colostrum, and this is like gold for the baby. This is a way the nurse can give the woman autonomy to make informed choices about the care she and her baby receive because some cultures do not believe in the benefits of the colostrum. Breastfeeding is done often, so it is important for the mother to stay hydrated and to relax while doing so. After the baby eats, the baby will need to burp. Ms. Tyson mentions that each baby is different when it comes to burping. If the mother is having trouble with feeding or has questions, a lactation consultant can be taken advantage of. After this important time of bonding, the baby will be taken for his or her first exam, this is also a way that no harm is done by applying only medically necessary interventions.
