My Tutoring Reflection

Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities. Through careful assessment, I could then evaluate my student and make a lesson plan that would build on his skills. These assessments include student reading inventory, running records, and spelling inventory. Through my observations I could identify my student’s reading and writing skills and apply them to their activities.
Overview of Tutoring Experience Through the tutoring sessions with my student, we focused on different sections in the lesson plan. We did activities that included; Poetry, Read-alouds, Language experiences/Writing, and Word work. We

The sheet explained how Kade likes to read, but he easily gets frustrated with words he doesn’t know. His interests include action, mystery, and adventure. Therefore, ‘Dinosaurs Before Dark’ was a perfect book for Kade to read. Kade’s mother was mostly concerned about Kade not having to struggle words and enjoy reading. With Kade’s reading I noticed that he did indeed struggle with certain words. This led me to focus the activities around words that he struggled with in the book (including words ending in ‘ile’ and ‘augh’). I also had Kade do his best with pronouncing unfamiliar words and breaking them down. For example, ‘Pteranodon’ was a word Kade struggled with. I had to tell him the ‘P’ was silent and we would repeat the word as we clapped it out. This is also where syllable word work came in, which Kade excelled at in later

At the beginning of the tutoring project, Jamie was thought to be on a second grade reading level. However, after the administration of the QRI-5, I learned that Jamie is on an independent level for word recognition and is on the instructional comprehension level. By the post-assessment Jamie could still read with an independent word recognition but her comprehension core decreased to frustration. The first QRI-5 that was administered the student was unfamiliar with the reading with a low 33%. During the second reading test, Jamie scored a 75% familiarity with the reading concepts in the text.…

Differentiated Lesson Design: Every week I would come up with a lesson plan that I believed would benefit Azlynn. I wanted the lesson to be based around what I thought she needed to work on the most. Each week we mainly rehearsed the same techniques. Before learning a new technique we needed to understand the one before. I would always model the correct usage of the technique and then we would practice it together.…

However, it also has some behaviorist influences as well because it is TEKS oriented. With each TEK there is an expectation attached. Posner (2004) supports this by restating what Robert Mager’s said, “an objective is an intent communicated by a statement describing a proposed change in a learner….It is a description of a pattern of behavior (performance) we want the learner to be able to demonstrate (p. 106).…

My job as a chemistry teaching assistant also required a combination of personal and practical skills and ability to be assertive without arrogance. Each week the students had to submit a heavy load of assignments, and keeping track of grading alone required a developed level in time efficiency, accountability, and organizing skills. I had to be knowledgeable enough about the subject to comprise worksheet, practice exams, review sessions, and grade fairly. I also had to know how to communicate that knowledge to the students: proving feedback on misunderstood requirements, clearly answering any questions they had about the material. I knew an accelerated chemistry course can be overwhelming, I always encouraged and motivated the students when…

Co-teaching provides greater teacher attention for students on all academic levels through collaboration and communication. With more intense instruction, both general and special education students increase their opportunity for more student engagement and participation in the educational setting. It is designed to provide a specific service of delivery to meet the educational needs of a diverse student body. The co-teaching process allows both teaches to express their ideas and reflect upon which ones are the most creative by facilitating two minds, two perspectives, and two learning styles (Brewer, 2013). How long have you been a special education/general education teacher?…

On September 30, 2015, me and five of my other fellow students that are in the generic nursing program at CUNY York college, were given the opportunity to do a presentation at Selfhelp center located in Bayside, New York. We arrived at Selfhelp at 8:45am with our Health Assessment Professor Dr. Amicucci accompanying us and began our presentation around 9:00am, on hypertension. I remember that a total of 15 people showed interest in attending our presentation and wanted to learn new information regarding hypertension. Selfhelp is a not-for-profit organization that has helped thousands of elderly and still continues to do so, by providing them with a direction in life. Selfhelp not only supports the elderly, but it also has a mission to aid…

In being a physics embedded tutor, I have helped a number of students to get a better understanding in the subject. I believe that helping students, regardless of their race, skin color and religious beliefs, will not only help themselves, but help the whole school and community in improving towards a better future. The Ohlone Embedded Tutor Program places a tutor in the classroom under the instructor's guidance to help students understand course concepts and enhance student engagement. I usually committed to full three hours per class session and sometimes provide tutoring support after class or on a different day if it is more agreeable depending on students’ availability and interest. Mostly in class I always offer my perspective of an…

Over the course of this term, I have learned several helpful techniques to incorporate into tutoring sessions. I’ve also learned about problems that can arise when tutoring and how to avoid making poor decisions. One of the best practices that I have learned is how to systematically address different problems a student is having with homework, by breaking assignments down into a more accessible format. When a student comes into a tutoring session and is overwhelmed with a homework assignment, helping them formulate an outline of what to complete with their assignment, helps set them up for success and lets them realize that they are capable of working through difficult problems. For instance, if a student brings in a poem and says that they have to write an essay on the poem, but they haven’t read it yet; sit with them and analyze the poem, help them come up with a general idea of what they think the poem is about, then help them start drafting out ideas for a paper.…

The concepts I have learned in this course will not only help me in my future work, but have also given me extremely useful life knowledge to apply to my personal life. I think it’s important that every adult has an understanding of auto and workers compensation insurance. Then as far as my future career in business, the concepts of general liability and property insurance are sure to apply whether I choose the finance or risk management route. The first concept in this course was commercial general liability and property insurance. Although I was unable to attend the first lecture, I was able to understand key concepts by reading the textbook chapters.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

Learning is a process in which we use our experiences to handle different situations. Learning is when we gather information and storing it in our memory for convenient use. Like for example, every time we use our smart phones to check NBA scores, weather forecast, daily news, and etc., we are taking basic steps in the learning process. This class has taught me the real meaning of learning. I have learned that learning involves taking in the world around you and connecting to what you are experiencing; making sense of it; and using critical thinking skills and good sound judgment in order to respond appropriately to any class assignment, job task, or opportunity to interact with other people.…
