Giving back to the community is the best way to describe the tutoring I did at Bessemer City Middle School. Bessemer City Middle is a school in a lower socioeconomic area and most of the students are from families who fall below the poverty line. I helped the students during the school day, but homework wasn’t the only thing we worked on. The tutoring sessions were also mentoring sessions, so I served not only as a tutor, but also as a mentor to the students. Once or twice a week I would meet with students who needed extra help in school. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I volunteered at the Forest Mall for the Tootsie Roll Drive. This organization provides service for those people with intellectual disabilities. What I physically did while volunteering at the Forest Mall was hand out Tootsie Rolls outside to the people that donated money. I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. My first experience working in a low income community was when I was a sophomore at Georgia State University. I was a member of a Post Readiness Educational Program (PREP). My role at PREP was to go to low income middle schools during the week and help seventh and eighth graders with homework and talk to them about how to prepare for high school and what they will need to do in order to succeed. When helping the students with their homework I realized how incredibly smart they were, yet they had so many outside influences that were a distraction. Some of these distractions included, but were not limited to, family problems, poverty, and issues with peers at school.…
