Reflection On The Ten Commandments

Through the birth of the ten commandments at Mount Sinai, we christians have based our values and laws based on these living words of God in hope of eternal life. However, people have often found these laws to be hard to follow due to temptations and the works of the devil. How then, could we live a holy life? How do we follow the laws? The answer was given to us by Jesus Christ. When the pharisees asked Jesus the question on what is the greatest commandment, he opened to us a new way to God. Jesus’ answer , “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like this: ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” shows us that this …show more content…
The greatest commandment given to us by Christ is a simpler version of the ten commandments. The first four laws state about the first phrase of the greatest commandment while the rest state the second phrase. The first four commandments are: I am the Lord your God, You shall have no other Gods before me, Do not take the name of God in vain and Keep the sabbath day holy.
All these commandments have to do with us loving God and respect him with all our heart and when we do that, we respect his power, his name and the day he rested as mentioned in the commandments. The fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth commandments are: Honor thy Father and Mother, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, and Thou shalt not covet your neighbor 's belongings. These commandments are based upon the second phrase which states that you must love your neighbor. When you love your neighbor, which means everyone from relatives to strangers, you respect them and treat them as such. By doing so we follow what the commandments state and that is why this is the greatest of all laws, for it is the foundation of christianity. Christ’s answer to the pharisees is the answer to how can use the laws in our daily lives. When we follow the greatest commandment, we learn to live a christian life and that opens the gate to heaven for

The Ten Commandments passed down by God through Moses to the Israelites were basically moral rules that the followers of the God of Israel were instructed to obey. Unlike Hammurabi’s code, the punishments for violating the law were the same for everyone and were believed to affect their standing in the afterlife. Both of these codes kept social and political order within their society by clearly defining what actions should and should not be done in order to keep peace between the ruler and their subjects. The Ten Commandments were implemented into law during the reign of Israel’s future kings. Israel’s strong focus on religion in their government gave their people insight on how they should behave as well as how the government should conduct their…

Deuteronomy Response 3A Deuteronomy or the Second Law stresses obedience. When Moses spoke to the Israelites, he reminded them of everything that happened to their entire nation since they were freed from Egypt. But he didn’t only stress the bad or negative aspects of following God, he also reminded them of the great things that had happened, the promises God gave to bring them to the Promised Land.…

Starting from the Garden of Eden, and continuing throughout our existence, God has repeatedly revealed to mankind His expectations, and the consequences of trespass against Him. He has clearly given rules to follow, and laws to abide by; First to Adam and Eve, then to every generation that has followed. He has also continually given us a clear and defined way out of sin, and back into a relationship with Him. In Leviticus, God “…established laws for proper covenant worship and for ritual cleansing. The use of (animal) blood … nothing less than life itself, (would atone) for sin” (Arnold & Beyer, 2008, p. 124).…

The genre of Deuteronomy 6:1-9 is law. Law was God’s gift to Israel, a covenant or promise that he made with them that if they lived Godly lives, they would be fruitful in the land he would give them. Often times when people today think of the word “law”, they associate it with being controlled, but in this context it wasn’t seen as a way to hold people back. While it was Israel’s constitution, the main purpose of law was to instruct the Israelites on how to thrive in the promised land and have a strong connection with God. Aside from those unique characteristics, there are six important principles to be aware of when interpreting law.…
