Gloria Naylor's 'Mommy What Does Nigger Mean'

I feel very strongly about my social issue and my views have not changed in the slightest bit. In Writing Assignment 2, I discussed the rising tensions between the public and the police. Throughout my every day life I had begun to notice that instead of being seen as heroes the police were becoming villains in the eyes of the public. By observing and talking with police officers I have seen first hand that they are struggling to work with a public that sees them as an enemy. It is a topic that most of the people around me do not have to deal with and reading over Gloria Naylor’s Mommy What Does Nigger Mean, it was nice to learn that other people have experienced the same things as me. While reading this article I realized that a word’s connotation has more impact that its’ meaning and that everyone has felt the pain of a well placed word or two; whether it was about the color of their skin, their looks, or their opinions. Major Writing Assignment 2 allowed me to creatively express my opinion on the rising issues between the police and public. My opinion stayed the same throughout and after my project was submitted. Research on the topic provided additional information, teaching me that though the police are facing an uphill battle they are given help by a few organizations that work to improve relations. Writing Assignment 3 was lengthy but kept me interested as I researched. I learned that many people support graffiti as an art form but many think that it is a common crime that needs to be stopped. The essay was easy for me to write because I felt passionately about the topic. My love of reading made this section of my paper easy to construct. Narrative writing allows my feelings to be put on paper clearly and create a bond with my readers, so it has become one of my favorite forms of writing. Writing Assignment 2 allowed my creativity to flow as I worked with an unfamiliar form of writing. I had never worked with multi-genre essays but I think that this form benefitted me in several ways. I had to step out of my comfort zone while thinking of a creative genre piece and find a way to portray my point in a clear way; I think this made my writing improve. The vague directions for this essay caused me copious amounts of grief, making this paper the hardest one for me to construct. Writing Assignment 3 was difficult because of its length, but I found that finishing it was surprisingly easy. The information on my topic was extremely abundant and I had a lot to discuss in my paper. My endurance in writing improved with this paper, and the project made my last few essays look puny in comparison. The hardest part of this paper was checking for grammar and punctuation errors. Because of its length, analyzing the paper for errors was extremely hard and consumed a large amount of
