Reflection On The Other Wes Moore

Superior Essays
In the Other Wes Moore book there were so many different highs and lows of the book. To me it felt like a roller coaster going up and down. The book has taught me many things that could easily change my life. Some of those would be respect cops no matter what, work hard, and don’t give up no matter what someone tells you. Now I am going to explain why these have affected me so much. The first big thing for me is respect cops no matter what. It seem that now a day’s people have little respect to cops and this is wrong. In the book the Other Wes killed a cop and is in jail for that. I feel that if he would have not killed a cop he would still be out right now. I personally think that cops keep us safe every day and they need appreciation for what they do. The Other Wes was on his way to being a good persona then something bad happened. I think that when something bad happens that brings you down you need to get back up and try harder instead of doing it the easy way like he did. This brings me to my next topic work hard at everything you do. …show more content…
In the book both Wes’s had a hard child hood but one worked harder than the other and made himself into something. I think both of them could have been something one might have been better but through hard work the Other Wes could have had a decent job and could have had a family and a house. To me that is success not having a lot of money because when you have a family even through the hard times you have someone to fall back to in some sense. I am a very hard working person and I have had to work for everything I have ever got. This to me is the best way of life because when you get stuff for free you have no sense of work. This leads into my next topic don’t give up because when you are hardworking you don’t give

In the book, The Other Wes Moore, two boys sharing the same name grow up in similar living situations. The boys resemble each other in terms of both being fatherless and growing up in rough areas where a life of crime and gang involvement is almost inevitable (according to the University of Michigan, only 76% of African American's who attend high school graduate while the others are most likely to spend the rest of their lives involved with drugs). This fate was not predetermined for both Wes Moore's due to the simple fact that they did not experience entirely similar upbringings. While the social environment in both cases exposed the boys to a life of crime the influence of direct role models, especially family had an even stronger impact.…

In the chapter “ Hunted” in the book “ The Other Wes Moore” is mainly how both Wes Moore were ‘haunted’ by their past tend to do the same mistakes that they’ve done before. The other Wes Moore was released from the jail and was give the second to have fresh start in his new life. At first, I could see that he seem to be serious in becoming a good guy by attending school though he was two years late from his classmates. But at I went through to the chapter, it looks like he was about to ruin his second chance (that might be last one) and became more vicious than before. Other would think that he could’ve done better in life with his second chance but all I could think of is that people also tend to repeat the same mistakes.…

“Wes went back to school immediately after leaving the juvenile detention facility... but he knew that he would not last long,” (Moore 110). Wes knew he was slacking in school, but he was not willing to put in the work to improve, he also didn’t have anyone that was willing to help him improve. Another key concept as to why the two Wes’ ended up with different lives was drug and alcohol abuse. Both Wes Moores were born in Baltimore, where many drug and alcohol related crimes occurred.…

Young people have the drive to accomplish things in life, but one of the hardest things to grasp is the concept of success. Success is the opportunity to be taken and completed with a purpose, just like in the stories “Ragged Dick” by Horatio Alger and “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara. In “Ragged Dick”, a boy named Dick wants to escape poverty and tries to learn many things so he can be well prepared for success. He is able to do this after saving a little boy from drowning and getting a job from the boy’s father, Mr. Rockwell. On the other hand, “The Lesson” shows a different viewpoint where a young girl named Sylvia is challenged and angered towards success.…

So by helping Wes avoid punishment for his actions, Tony is reinforcing that behavior for the rest of his life. The acceptance of violence and the need to escalate it, resurfaces in Wes’ life during his teenage years. One night as Wes was saying goodbye to a girl he was physically, yet not quite romantically, involved with, he was confronted by the girl’s boyfriend.…
