The Importance Of Discrimination In The United States

I believe I am tapping into subjects that I may not have addressed in a very long time, or even ever within the multicultural class. I never stopped to think about how slavery, discrimination, prejudices, biases, all began within the United States, and world altogether. This week, I was able to read more about indigenous rights and individuals. There are many issues that our country face, and to know that discrimination is still in effect is sad. My grandfather is of the Jamaican descent. He often speaks about his first experience coming to America. He spoke about how he didn’t understand racial background or race colors when he first arrived in America. He stated that what he did notice was that some people are darker or lighter skin, but …show more content…
This video summed up everything that I often think about. This video was about the post traumatic slave syndrome. First, I was interesting in finding books, and even meeting Dr. Joy Degruy. I know that some may believe that I may favor this week’s video the most because I am African American. However, it just so happen that I finally felt like some sort of freedom. Freedom in sense that I am not by myself. There were many points that she spoke about that I often thought about. I would wonder what exactly I could do to make things better. It seems as if change has to start within our communities. There has been a great amount of shootings and gang violence in Chicago. However, it just so happens surrounds the African American community. I wonder about the disconnect from generation to generation. I also wonder about the educational system in Chicago. We expect greater and better from young individuals. However, when I look at the communities that are deemed as underserved I see schools that have low test scores. While I believe that test scores is a small percentage of what the school is teaching students, I also believe that many schools are at a certain level due to lack of many resources. It saddens me to work with students who are in high school and struggling with basic reading and writing skills. I even wonder about the parents. Many times when I have to speak with parents, there aren’t any parent present to discuss the …show more content…
It is truly amazing how much exposure we receive on a daily without even noticing it. While listening to the speaker, she began to point out companies that advertise sex in women. It was shocking to learn that even Burger King has used slogans that refer to sex. After hearing this, I began to find other advertisements on my own to see how woman are exploited. I’ve always thought that it was a double standard between men and women. I never understood why. I believe that our government and society is corrupt. Many things were put into place years ago, and it seem as if we as United States citizens are still feeling the backlash of the decisions made years ago. Our nation is seen as the land of the free, and being equal. However, it seem that we are free to do things, as long as it lies within the rules of the United States. Discrimination is very prevalent in our nation, so I couldn’t say that everyone is equal. I enjoyed listening to the male speaker within our discussion videos because it seemed as if he understood the exploitation of women. Oftentimes, I believe men tend to adore women as “eye candy” or something for their sexual way of being. However, the speaker seemed as if he wanted to get the male group to understand how corrupt our society is. As a woman, I began to identify things that we experience on a daily that separates us from the male species. I began to

Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexican-Americans, whether legal or not, have been discriminated against in the United States since they came to the land said to be built upon freedom and equality. They have became an ethnic, social, and linguistic minority in a vastly white English speaking majority. Through appealing to morals, examples of discrimination, and the use of statistics, Gibson emphasizes the urgency and magnitude of the problem of Hispanic discrimination in America. By appealing to the morals of his non-Hispanic audience, Gibson effectively proves that discriminating against Hispanics is clearly the wrong thing to do and that our society needs to come together to stop this problem. He begins his argument by saying what truly “makes…

America has not always the great country we have been lead to believe. Since the end of the civil war, racism against blacks grew greater and greater with every passing day making it harder for these people to live their lives. This leads to the unfair treatment of immigrants trying to find a new life in America after being pushed out of their countries by poverty, revolution, and starvation. These events happen with an incompetent government only interested in doing anything to benefit itself. America has treated the people living within and arriving at the country with discrimination with an incompetent government.…

Since 1492, when Columbus arrived in the Indies and began to exploit the Native people living there, race has been a controversial issue in America (Zinn 6). Soon after Columbus, Europeans began importing African slaves for labor (Gates 3). In ancient times, people had different views of what race meant: some viewed race as being a representation of where one were currently living, while others insisted that it was based upon where one came from, or how they looked (Aronson 131). Regardless of the accepted definition, this discrepancy proves that race is based on completely superficial prejudices and does not reflect any “natural inferiority.” Race-based slavery has played an important role throughout American history, which differs from other…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

Topic 1 Participation Assignment 2 “What We Talk About When We Talk About Race in America” I found a lot of points within the discussions from all three guests that suggest systematic racism. However, Paul Butlers touched heavily on structural discrimination being found in our society including blacks being targeted by police, making less money, not having access to housing benefits, and being overlooked for jobs, mortgages, loans, and other opportunities more available to whites. Each guest had a great deal of perspective to contribute to the conversation. Paul Butler, author and professor at Georgetown University, focused greatly on White privilege and structural discrimination.…

In an article, A Dream Unrealized for Blacks, it stated “Chicago's current population of 2.7 million is nearly equal thirds black, white, and Hispanic, but most blacks still live in a separate part of town” (Bogira 2). This shows that despite there being multiple races in Chicago, blacks are the most segregated. This segregation can cause a continuous era of racism and discrimination towards black people. That is why it’s important for African Americans to be free of such immoral discrimination, the discrimination that was supposed to end many years ago. Racism is not long gone like most people believe it to be, but it’s creeping in the shadows of their negligence.…

In all cultures there is some sort of stereotypes that persist, despite laws that outlaw discrimination and teaching that has tried to enlighten our minds. In the United States, there are the pervasive stereotypes such as blonde women are dumb, black people are thieves and Hispanics are lazy. While each of those stereotypes don’t really hold true, still they persist. Even the Chinese are said to be racists with some regions feeling superior to other regions and admiring white people. In 1619, around 20 African Americans were shipped from Africa to America and sold into slavery in the British North American Colonies. Prior to the 1920s, women were not allowed many of the rights men had and could not vote. These are all examples of discrimination against minorities which took place during the Progressive Era. Without the assistance of the government, these Social Reforms may be non-existent and we could still have slavery and child labor today. Discrimination during the progressive era led to many uprises of violence, deaths, and, with the government playing the roles in our lives, many new laws which contributed to public safety and a more equally fair country.…

title Discrimination occurs everyday in the United States, and it can take the many different forms. Discrimination is defined as the unequal treatment of a person or group of people. Discrimination in the workplace was made illegal by the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects U.S. citizens from being discriminated against due to his or her race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, when seeking a job ( Lee ). Although this act allowed many people to obtain certain jobs that weren’t available to them before, where is the protection for undocumented workers in the United States? Treating people doing the same jobs, and in some cases more demanding jobs, unfairly because they lack certain documentation is by definition…
