Reflection On The Moanalua Middle School Band

Decent Essays
I really appreciate the fact that you let us, the Moanalua Middle School Band, to let us perform at the Menehune Classic. It was such an honor to play with the high schools from around the island, including the high school from the school itself. I’m an MMS Symphonic Band student who plays the Clarinet.
The marching band from the different high schools inspired me so much, because the fact that a student in school can remember where to walk, and what to play while remembering what to do for school in general is pretty amazing, I’m sure they had to go to multiple rehearsals while practicing on their own time to remember their music and where they have to go. Somethings that I really loved where how the multiple bands played their music, like

Competition days are long and tiring, but always full of excitement. There is a process as to how the day will go depending on when we perform, where we have to travel, and many other aspects. Most of them start out the same way and go in a similar order every time, but there are always surprises that come along the way during these days. As the day starts on a competition Saturday, the Worthington Kilbourne Marching Band arrives normally in the late morning or early afternoon.…

“Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.” --John Maxwell. This quote rings true in many ways, especially in leading of a group of your peers. I will bring many leadership qualities to the band, including responsibility, music teaching skills, listening skills, and being a “side-by-side” leader. Being a “side-by-side” leader simply means that instead of being above the section, I lead by example.…

As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…

In high school, I remember where my biggest dream changed into a reality. I was a member of the Greenville High School Tiger Pride Marching Band. I played the alto saxophone. Unlike my bandmates, I did not know how to read music then. I played by ear, and whatever scale, jazz run, or chromatic I heard, I could play it back just like that.…

Adrenaline ran through my veins all day, and Disney references spilling out of my mouth like a broken record in a player. No one else accepted my elation, but I on the other hand, had a countdown down for this jaunt as soon as I heard of it in August. As I sat down on the dirty, sweaty gym floor like the rest of the band, I began to process everything that was happening. In 26 hours, 48 minutes, and 28 seconds, according to my countdown, the entire high school band would be in Orlando, Florida. In four days time, our provincial marching band would be featured marching in a parade in the Magic Kingdom of the happiest place on earth!…

The Philosophy of My Band Director When thinking about my band director in high school, I see her as an interventionist in Wolfgang and Glickman’s classroom management philosophy. Since my junior year of high school, I have observed my band director in her middle school band classes. Because her ensemble numbers have been growing rapidly, she has turned into an interventionist. She does not give the students much free time because they have the opportunity to get very loud and out of control. Her 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band classes all consist of more than 60 students and just one teacher.…

With a whistle around my neck and two friends by my side, I was never more proud than being a drum major for the Clark band. There is no place that made me more joyful than in the band hall, and outside on the podium, seeing months of improvement in front of me. The Clark band will always have a special place in my heart, giving me pleasant memories, and most importantly, two new best friends, that I am proud to call my fellow drum majors. The best moment that I have experienced in marching band was last year at Wylie Invitational, our final marching contest. It was six o’clock on a Saturday morning.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…
