Reflection On The Mission Of JROTC

Improved Essays
The mission of JROTC is "to motivate young people to be better citizens". Wikipedia defines a good citizen as someone who shows respect, has a good attitude, helps out his community, and is an overall great person. Within JROTC I have gained all but not restricted to of the qualities above from acronyms and values like the 7 army values (LDRSHIP) to service projects like Operation Maverick Child.
Through JROTC, I have been required to learn valuable acronyms, values, and tools. One of the most important and impactful for me was the 7 Army Values, also known as, LDRSHIP. Which stands for: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. The word that stands out the most for me is Respect, because it is the ability to take care of others and make the community better, the way a good citizen would.

In JROTC, I also participated in Operation Feed the Hungry where I was able to assist the battalion in collecting over a thousand cans for underprivileged families in Charlotte, to provide them with a memorable Thanksgiving. Through these learning opportunities, I have recently been able to begin working on my Boy Scout Eagle project which will benefit Mallard Creek High School's JROTC Raiders team. My eagle project will include two rope bridge lanes, and a sign that will read "Raiders. Lead the Way. MCHS Maverick

In Junior ROTC, I learned many different ways to not only help myself but to also help others. I have seen that many young adults in this generation and country believe that it is “too hard” to go help others. Whether or not the service is small, picking up trash for example, or something large, something should be done and you should get involved. Getting involved with the community and the people around you because in the JROTC mission statement you are basically trying to help others and yourself become a better citizen.…

The United Sates Army formed in 1775 when the need for a militia arose during the Revolutionary War. The necessity for such service is the result of the population’s need for defense and protection. Like many occupations, the Army serves the civilian population’s needs through protection and defense. What makes the Army a true profession though, is a unique set of standards and ethical values that embody each person that accepts the calling to serve for the country. These standards come from five essential characteristics of a profession: expertise, trust, development, values and service.…

Stewardship of the Army Profession and Civilian-Military Relations There are five core characteristics that compose the Army profession; trust, honorable service, military expertise, stewardship, and esprit de corps (Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 1, The Army Profession, 2015, p. 6-1). While all are critical to maintaining a healthy Army, stewardship, as described in ADRP 1 chapter 6, is the central tenant I believe keeps the other four alive. Stewardship is the act of taking care of something. Without it, other core values merely come and go. Like a garden that has good soil, light, and water, it will all still wither away without a gardener to routinely provide more water, turn the soil, and prune the plants.…

Army relies heavily on group efforts. Like James Sinegal’s model of mutual trust, the military desires its leaders to create a positive environment for the organization to prosper. First and foremost, effective leadership begins with strong character. The U.S. Department of the Army has set several universal standards, such as the Army Values and Warrior Ethos, to establish ethical guidelines throughout the organization (3-1, 3-4). Within these guidelines, empathy is weighted among the most important characteristics to have.…
