I will be working in Uniondale which does have a primarily Black and Hispanic and I know that most of the children in the program fall into one of those two ethnic groups. Now, while I identify as Black, that does not mean I cannot relate and sympathize with those of other races who I may be working with. Our class discussions on how to effectively communicate with someone who may speak a different language and how patience is key in such a situation could very well resemble something I encounter while at my placement. I learned that both myself and my classmates are willing able to be culturally sensitive and take the time to understand others and help them to the best of our ability. Despite the fact that we come from different cultural backgrounds, we are able to put those difference aside in order to help our fellow human.
There is a common misconception that none of what you learn in your first year of college can be applied in real life and is, therefore useless.
