Speaking Reflective Essay

I thought this lecture was interesting. There were three guest speakers – a white conservative man (Craig _____), a LGBT Hispanic woman (Sherriff Valdez), and a black man (Ashton Cumberbatch). Normally I would never point out race – that is not a big deal to me whatsoever. However, in this case I am. The three speakers gave excellent speeches about the justice system, understanding different cultures, and “getting comfortable with the uncomfortable” in regards to race issues.
Mr. Craig ____ opened my eyes about the justice system and how it has evolved and what it really is supposed to be there for and do. _____ was an excellent speaker, he gave many quotes that kept the crowd entertained in what he was saying. I thought it was interesting

She really made an emphasis to tell us that, “What you’re saying and what is understood is two completely different things.” At first I didn’t really get what she meant, I sort of just brushed it off. She kept repeating it and then went on to further explain what she meant by telling us a story. She had told us how a Hispanic man came to America and didn’t know a lot of English. He was older and needed to go to the doctor, so he did. He was prescribed medicine that said “Take pill once a day, three times a day.” The old man got very sick after taking this medicine. All of the doctors thought he was trying to commit suicide; they were so confused as to why he took eleven pills! It turns out that eleven in Spanish is ‘once’; he thought he was supposed to take eleven pills three times a day! The story she told opened my eyes as to what she had meant by “What you’re saying and what is understood is two completely different things”.
The last speaker was Mr. Ashton Cumberbatch. Mr. Cumberbatch had a long list of incredibly things he has accomplished over the years. He went on to tell us how we “Needed to get comfortable talking about the uncomfortable.” He meant this in regards to racial issues. Mr. Cumberbatch went on to tell us how race was still such a huge issue nation-wide and gave us many examples of it. He had told us that in 1928 the city of Austin, TX wanted to

Throughout Mr. Cumberbatch’s speech he blamed white people, and criticized white people for everything – saying how they were corrupt and the reason for the governments failures. Sherriff Valdez disagreed greatly with Mr. Cumberbatch. The two of them reacted professionally about the situation but I could see how much of a conflict it was. Sherriff Valdez even got up and left before The Eyes of Justice was even over because this it was so heated. I took away a valuable lesson from seeing this; it doesn’t matter how old or how experienced you are with this – racial issues are sensitive and different for everyone. It’s best to always be considerate of others and how it would make them

The overall rhetorical situation discussed in the special event "Question Bridge: Black Males" was the problems associated in the young black male communities and how certain scenarios are not that different, racial wise. This does sound broad, but it does fit the topic appropriately since the volunteers associated with the documentary touched on a lot of topics pertaining to young black male communities like finding that special someone, discussing how drugs and smoking is viewed as, generations begin to differ in appeals, etc. One of the questions brought up in the documentary was "In this era, in this society, do you consider yourself to be free as a human being?" A very interesting question since there will be many appeals towards it;…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Good public speaking skills are rare, it takes a lot of practice and experience to express yourself fluently in front of a crowd. To me, a great public speaker is one who can put their words together in the simplest way possible, so that every spectator can understand the message. Also engaging with the audience in order to keep their attention. The last good speech I heard was by Congressmen John Lewis back in October here on campus, he had great stories, was very informative and didn’t hesitate to engage the audience. I would be bothered if a political candidate used profanity in the middle of a speech because it is extremely unprofessional, I would not want that person to represent me or my community.…

The art of persuading an audience to think a certain way about a specific topic is not as simplistic as many believe. Therefore, the persuaders often have to utilize certain strategies in order to strengthen their views, which in the end gives them the upper hand. Throughout this essay, I will be discussing how my previous essays directly correlate to one other in many different ways including the utilization of multiple articles, rhetorical strategies, and the use of ATCC (Author, Title, Credibility, Claim) and analysis as to why the essays contains these writing strategies. First off, in my essays one and three they both posses rhetorical strategies that are used to strengthen the authors objective and make their points more credible to the reader. These essays are specifically focused around modern day technology and how people function in today’s society.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Being Mexican American I believed I had a bit of an unfair advantage taking this course. I was looking forward to learning more about my culture and myself but at the back of my mind I believed I would already know some of the material. I am very happy to say that I have learned a lot more than I expected. I have learned a lot about Hispanic cultures other than mine, politics, and economics, and many other topics but off all the things we covered in class the three that most stuck out to me were the early history of Latinos in the US, learning about privilege, and educational achievement of Latinos.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…
